Mr. Chzmachian before starting the interview, we would like to
congratulate you on the title of the best banker of the year, with the
largest recognition and achievements. Did you expect the award?
Thanks a lot. Of course, when they informed me that I was recognized
the best banker 2010 by 1,000 art and culture workers and politicians,
I was very much surprised. It has been always pleasure to be so high
graded, and binding at the same time. I should note that this award is
to the entire banking system, and all the other bank managers could
get it, as each of them had overcome serious obstacles and
difficulties during the crisis in the previous years, thus keeping a
sustainable banking system in Armenia.
What do you think, why you?
It is difficult for me to answer this question, but maybe it was
caused by the fact that among the banking managers I'm the one to have
such long experience in banking.
What is the reason of your long stay in the banking system?
It has been 38 years already that I'm continuously engaged in banking
system. I have never worked in other areas, and most likely I will
never work. I think that the secret of working longevity in the
banking system and any other area is the fact that a man should love
his work, be honest in the work and be a little bit successful, which
will keep him away from the wish to change the work.
Is there a slogan that leads you in your life?
No slogans to lead me in my life but there are very important
principles to follow: to be honest with a human, friend, customer and
everybody.
Mr. Chzmachian, as the most experienced manager in Armenian banking
system, how do you evaluate 2010 for the entire banking system?
>From the point of view of the outcomes of the Global financial crisis
of course it was a very difficult year. However, the ice moved,
positive shifts have been observed as compared with the figures of
2008-2009. These years were difficult not so for the banking system,
as for the economy. Some little success of 2010 allows us to expect
2011-2012 years to be the years of stabilization and rehabilitation.
What was the year 2010 for `Anelik Bank'?
In general I would characterize the year as a stabilization year. The
growth of the main indicators of the Bank are the best evidence of
that, particularly, Anelik Bank's profit for 2010 totaled 325 million
drams. During the year assets of the Bank has grown almost 25% to 60
billion drams. A good result has been recorded in the deposit
portfolio: term deposit portfolio (raised from individuals) has grown
by more than 50%. Besides, I would like to mention that credit
portfolio has grown by 20% by reaching about 30 billion drams.
The first Armenian banks were founded in 1990, and among them was
Anelik Bank. Much has changed since then. Many banks emerged and
disappeared. Only those that were honest with customers and were not
focused on their profits only, have survived and developed.
I watch Anelik Bank among the best ten Armenian banks as a stable and
reliable bank.
What are the most remarkable events of 2010?
In 2010 the Bank started the 3rd decade of its activity. Starting from
the beginning of 2010 the Bank launched negotiations with a number of
international structures, some of which were not present in Armenia
before. As a result new agreements were signed in Q4 2010.
In 2010 we commenced and are successfully completing reconstruction of
the new Administrative building of the Bank Head Office. In February
2011 a new branch in the town of Sevan was opened.
The new decade is marked with a new slogan: the former slogan of the
Bank `Guarantee of Your Success' was replaced with a new one `Strong
Basis, Reliable Future' which highlights the passed way of the Bank
and the trust in future. It fully expresses advantages and the mission
of the Bank.
A serious cooperation was launched with mass media for full coverage
of the Bank's activity and introduction of the new products of the
Bank.
What international structures does Anelik Bank collaborate with?
During the 2 decades of its activity Anelik Bank has always paid
important attention to cooperation with international structures and
has always been involved into the projects implemented by the given
structures in Armenia. It is worth mentioning that Anelik Bank was the
first to commence collaboration within lending projects with
international structures. In 1995 we were the first to collaborate
with Eurasia Foundation within lending projects. Only after 2 years
international structures began cooperating with other Armenian banks.
Today Anelik Bank cooperates with different international structures
within almost all lending projects, particularly with EBRD, KFW Bank,
Asian Development Bank, Eurasian Development Bank, International
Financial Corporation and a number of other structures.
In 2010 together with EBRD and ARMSEFF a new credit product is
successfully developed, which enables our industrial enterprises and
factories to receive loans for development of power saving systems and
make them more competitive. Being the first to be involved into this
project we are sure that we shall promote energy recovery and
development and increase of the competiveness.
Anelik Bank was the first to actively make money remittances. Did the
volume of money transfers change much in 2008-2010 comparing to the
previous years?
Anelik Bank is the only Bank in Armenia to have own remittance system
`Anelik'. Anelik Bank and its subsidiary ĞAnelik RUğ in Moscow
developed the system in 1996. I think that `Anelik' system has
performed a great patriotic work which can be proved by a dozens of
thousands of people. During that period `Anelik' system allowed people
transferring money to Armenia, to help their relatives and support the
motherland. This fact is of very high importance for me.
Today 63.000 service points worldwide perform money transfers through
Anelik system to more than 90 countries worldwide.
As for the volume of transfers in 2008-2009, it fell because of the
crisis that generally affected all the money transfers system in the
country.
2010 became stabilization year for `Anelik' system.
Your expectations from 2011?
As I have already mentioned 2011 will be a year of recovery and
stabilization, for which all of us shall work with big enthusiasm.
Having a skilled and professional staff, loyal partners and good
clients, we are confident that in case of proper operation, the year
2011 and the following years will become years of achievements and
success not only for Anelik Bank but for Armenia in general.
