YEREVAN, May 12, /ARKA/. In an interview with Golos Armenii (Voice of
Armenia) newspaper Vardan Khachatiran, the chief executive manager of
Armenia's natural gas operator, ArmRosGazprom (ARG, a joint venture
with Russian Gazprom) said the venture will increase the capacity
of its Abovian underground gas storage facility to 170-180 million
cubic meters by the end of 2013.
The Abovian gas storage is one of the principal elements of Armenia's
gas transmission system ensuring the country's energy security. It
was constructed in 1962 on rock salt deposits at a depth of 800-1,000
meters. The gas storage regulates also the seasonal gas consumption
by Armenia's industrial sector and supplies gas to the country's most
important gas consumers.
The 27-th underground reservoir, put into action recently and located
1000 meters deep with a capacity to hold 19-20 million cubic meters
of gas, has increased the capacity of the gas storage to 140 million
cubic meters. According to the company's long-term plan, the capacity
is to be raised to 200 million cubic meters in nine years.
Vardan Khachatrian said the company's investment policy has been
designed to ensure a steady operation of the gas transporting system,
which requires 'use of advanced technology and engineering solutions.'
"We are trying to keep up abreast with the times by introducing modern
technology and techniques in our sector,' he said.
He added also that the company's investment priority is to commission
the fifth unit of Hrazdan thermal power plant with the total capacity
of 480 megawatt.
Vardan Khachatrian said also 95% of Armenian households and industries
are connected to the natural gas network, one of the highest index in
the world. He also said a random survey of the company's subscribers
shows that 72% are satisfied with the quality of its services.
'This is of course a good figure, but our goal is to make 95% of our
subscribers be satisfied,' he said.
ARG is the only company dealing with import and distribution of
Russian natural gas coming to Armenia from Russia via Georgia. It was
established in 1997. Russian Gazprom holds more than 80 percent in it,
the rest is owned by Armenian government.
