DETAILED PROBE INTO MARCH EVENTS WILL HELP ARMENIA ACHIEVE PROGRESS - EU

    13.05.11

A detailed investigation of the 1-2 March 2008 events and the release
of all the citizens arrested over those events will help Armenia to
achieve progress, the European Union has said.

In a statement released on Friday, the EU said that it welcomes
Armenian authorities' move to sanction the opposition a long-expected
    rally on Liberty Square recently.

"In that relation, we welcome the fact that for the first time since a
long period the Yerevan Municipality allowed the opposition to hold a
rally on Liberty Square on April 28," read the statement. "We hope that
further applications to hold a rally will receive the same response."

At least ten people were killed and several wounded as the riot
police cracked down on opposition activists on 1-2 March 2008 after
the oppositionists took to Liberty Square and set up makeshift camps,
claiming the presidential vote had been stolen. Many were arrested and
sentenced over those cases, and at least five still remain behind bars.

The EU also hailed President Serzh Sargsyan's April 20 statement in
which he urged the law-enforcement bodies to launch a new and more
detailed investigation into the 1-2 March 2008 events.

"In this same context we welcome that during the recent week three
opposition activists - Harutyun Urutyan, Roman Mnatsakanyan and Aram
Bareghamyan - arrested and sentenced after those events, were released
    earlier," read the statement.

"We are calling on the Armenian authorities to immediately release
all the remaining activists. The European Union considers that a
detailed investigation of the 2008 March events and the release of
all the people arrested over those events will help Armenia achieve
    real progress," it added.

"The European Union wants to once again affirm the importance attached
to enlivening relations with Armenia and is urging on Armenia's
government to fully use the opportunities provided by the Eastern
Partnership and European Neighborhood Policy [programs]," read the
    EU statement.
