YEREVAN, May 13, /ARKA/. Prime minister Tigran Sarkisian said today
exports of Armenian fish to Russia may double this and next year.
Speaking at a parliament discussion on 2010 budget performance he
said the export of fresh and frozen Armenian fish to Russia more than
doubled in 2010 to about 400 metric tons.
Sarkisian said the forecast is backed by several major fishing projects
which have attracted large investments and which are supposed to help
double the output and win new markets.
The prime minister also recalled agricultural projects implemented
last year, particularly, import of 1,100 elite Russian wheat seeds.
Armenia also imported 262 pedigree heifers to boost production of
meat and milk. According to him, milk capacity of imported cows is
4-5 times higher than that of local cows.
He said overall Armenia imported 1,222 pedigree cows and oxen. Also 14
pedigree cattle farms were set up and 1,100 pedigree heifers were born.
Last year Armenia exported 135,000 sheep, by 56% more than in 2009.
The customs cost of exported sheep rose last year to $14 million.
According to the Armenian Fishing Association, the annual output is
about 300,000 metric tons, which may rise up to $1.5-$2 billion.
According to nature protection ministry, there are 239 fishing farms
in Armenia.
