The Minister of Defense of Armenia has recently stated on the First
Public TV Channel that Armenia reacts to the death of every Armenian
soldier shot by Azerbaijani snipers more severely, and inflicts more
losses on Azerbaijan.
This style of work of Armenia is, of course, commendable. However, as
the Azerbaijani snipers go on killing Armenian soldiers, ostensibly
the Azeris do not care that the Armenian side responds twofold or
threefold. Perhaps soldiers' lives are worth nothing to Aliyev, or
perhaps they have no demographic problems, so they do not even count
the victims.
Meanwhile, for the Armenian side, the life of each soldier must be
invaluable, therefore it must take such steps that would influence
Azerbaijan to revise its policy of pressure through snipers.
What is to be done? The only solution seems to be conquering Baku,
which is not realistic, at least until Eurovision 2012 in May, when
we will at last have the opportunity to deploy in Baku and give it
a surprise.
However, there can be other options to teach Azerbaijan a lesson,
which are already in diplomacy. It is interesting whether Armenia
has tried these options. In other words, perhaps it is time for the
Armenian side to announce about quitting the negotiations unless
Azerbaijan removes snipers from the border.
For instance, what if on March 5 Serzh Sargsyan refused to leave for
Sochi to participate in the three-party meeting of the presidents
of Armenia, Russia and Azerbaijan? On March 4 the Azeris killed an
Armenian soldier but Serzh Sargsyan, nevertheless, left for Sochi
and judging by his photos he spent a very nice time with Medvedev
and Aliyev there.
Should we expect the international community, the mediators to take
seriously Armenia's urges and appeals to mediators to force Azerbaijan
to remove its snipers?
In November 2010 Serzh Sargsyan boycotted the NATO Summit in Lisbon
because the principle of self-determination was not included in
NATO's final statement. Is this fact more valuable than the life of
an Armenian soldier that Serzh Sargsyan boycotted the summit but not
the Sochi meeting?
Or perhaps Medvedev's fury worries Armenia more than NATO's
dissatisfaction.
