On May 18 in the National Assembly the joint press conference of
RA NA Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan and the President of the European
Parliament Jerzy Buzek was held. They answered the journalists'
questions. Jerzy Buzek noticed that "Armenia and the EU citizens
were in their common house, which was Europe". "You are a decisive,
important neighbor for EU, especially in the South Caucasus region. I
want to remind the words of Charlez Aznavour: After winter a life
tree will blossom for you, Armenia. These words are very important. We
create partnership with each other due to Armenia being open." He noted
that Armenia is making progress through reforms. That is the choice
of Armenia, and the cooperation will be easy, if the juridical-legal,
free mass media and other systems would be compatible with those
of Europe. He said that he was pleased with the cooperation that
existed between the parliaments of Armenia and EU. In response to
the question on the NK cooperation with EP, Mr. Buzek noted, "We
didn't recognize Nagorno Karabakh as a unit, instead we always speak
about the territorial integrity of the countries. However, it did not
mean that we might forget the people's basic needs - interpersonal
relations, situation on the roads. It is better to lay a helping
hand, there would not be wars, and this is the EU and EP policy. If
we want to find comprehensive solution in future, we should prepare
the communities for that, the Nagorno Karabakh, too. You should
not worry about it. As the public opinion involvement is decisive
for us in the problem settlement. In response to the question of
"Azg" on the encouragement of EU representatives' visits to NKR,
"is not it the violation of the rights of people living there?" Jerzy
Buzek repeated that EU does not recognize Nagorno Karabakh as a unit:
"this is important from the point of view of your question. From the
point of view of the violation of human rights, we have to assist
every citizen, and if there is a need in humanitarian assistance,
we have to be ready for it. It is not connected to the significant
political issues, as the most important thing for a person is his or
her own effort, welfare", he said.
In response to the journalist's question on the availability of
"political prisoners" in Armenia, Hovik Abrahamyan stressed that he
didn't agree with the formulation "political prisoners". He than noted
that he has sent a letter to the RA President on Sasun Mikaelyan's
release, as the health situation of the last is not good. At the
discussion with the president the NA Speaker knew that the issue will
be positively solved.
Responding the journalist's question on March 1 events, the EP
President noted that he had discussed this issue with RA President
and RA NA Speaker, and they spoke about the March 1 events that were
described as an open wound. This issue must be solved. Armenian two
officials ensured him that an examination for every case was underway,
"Let's believe that you are on a right track", said the EP President
and added that Armenia should solve the issue itself, and Europe
could only share its experience, but not put pressure.
