The resumption of military actions against the Republic of Nagorno
Karabakh will prompt Armenia to fully commit itself to making
Azerbaijan quit the idea, Armenia's defense minister has said.
Speaking at a conference dedicated to the role of the Collective
Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in the South Caucasus, Seyran
Ohanyan said that Armenia will have to resort to military actions
in such scenario as it is the "safeguard of the physical security of
Karabakh's population".
Further, he said that given Armenia's membership to the CSTO, it
can expect an adequate assistance and response by its CSTO allies if
there is such a need.
"First of all, allies have some liabilities towards each other.
Secondly, they have opportunities to adequately respond to a possible
aggression," said Ohanyan.
Further, Ohanyan urged on the CSTO members to spare no efforts to
avoid a situation when the behavior of a member state will harm the
interests of the other.
He also said that Armenia is inclined to a peaceful settlement of the
Karabakh conflict and hopes the CSTO allies will admit and comprehend
Armenia's position over the issue.
"Today the situation in the South Caucasus is instable, explosive,
conceivable of destabilization," said Ohanyan.
"Armenia - taking into account its exclusive geographic position
and having no immediate borders with any of the CSTO allies - is
especially interested in the quickest settlement of the situation
and in strengthening the stability of its borders."
