World to condemn use of force in Karabakh - Medvedev, Obama
DEAUVILLE. May 26
Only a peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict can lead to
stability and reconciliation, while the use of force will exacerbate
the situation and deepen the confrontation, Russia and the United
States say.
"We confirm that only the settlement achieved at negotiations may lead
to peace, stability and reconciliation," says the joint statement of
Presidents Dmitry Medvedev and Barack Obama on Nagorno-Karabakh.
"The new use of force will bring new sufferings and devastation and
will be condemned by the international community," the statement says.

We are urging the sides' leaders to prepare the population for peace,
not a war, the Russian and U.S. leaders said.
The Armenian and Azerbaijani presidents should demonstrate political
will and finish the work on the basic principles at the forthcoming
summit this June, the statement said.
Further protraction will only put the parties' commitment to reaching
an agreement under question, the statement said.
We are prepared to attest to the formal adoption of these principles
and assist the preparation of a peace agreement and then support its
implementation with international partners, the U.S. and Russian
presidents said.
