Azeris rightly proud of past, present day progress
Ashraf Ansari
AMBASSADOR Dashgin Shikarov of Azerbaijan hosted reception in
Islamabad to mark his country's Republic Day. Governor KP Barrister
Masood Kausar and Minister of State Raza Hayat Haraj were the guests
of honour.
Ambassadors and other diplomats of Central Asian countries, Iran,
Afghanistan, Turkey and Srilanka as well as Arab and Western countries
were among the guests who greeted the Azerbaijan ambassador on the
Republic Day of his country. Several former Pakistani diplomats and
prominent people belonging to various walks of life participated in
the reception.
Azerbaijan can be proud of its rich past. Its democratic tradition
goes back to May 28, 1918 when it declared itself as Azerbaijan
Democratic Republic. It was the first democratic country in the whole
East and Muslim world. Azerbaijan Democratic Republic had come into
being as a result of a long struggle of the Azeri people who believed
in democratic rights and democracy as a political system. However the
country came under the Soviet domination not long after it had emerged
as a sovereign democratic state.
The Azeris regained independence in 1991 amid demise of the Soviet
Union. They lost no time in restoring democratic order in the country
and set out on path to progress. The democratic government of
Azerbaijan took steps to provide all amenities and facilities to
ensure a purposeful and happy life for people. The government not only
restored mosques but also helped non-Muslims in building their places
of worship, according to their own traditions.
The democratic Azeri state, though predominantly Muslim in terms of
faith, is equally benevolent towards the non-Muslims. Azerbaijan has
emerged as a democratic country where all people irrespective of their
colour or creed are treated equally by the state. All Azeris are in
the mainstream, none being marginalized or sidelined. That seems to be
main reason for harmony and order in their society.
Azerbaijan is blessed with vast natural resources which are being
exploited for the welfare of the people. Azerbaijan has developed
friendly relations with Pakistan and other countries of Economic
Cooperation Organization (ECO) as well as with rest of the world. It
has been trying to resolve Nagorno-Karabakh issue with Armenia.
Armenia has continued to occupy the Nagorno-Karabakh region which is
historically and ethnically part of Azerbaijan. Pakistan supports
Azerbaijan's claim over Nagorno-Karabakh. Pakistan and Azerbaijan are
cooperating in several fields and there are vast possibilities of more
and more cooperation between the two countries.
