Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan has clarified his statement
over the "broken trough", which brought about various interpretations
last week. On Sunday, at the Republican Party's economic forum
the premier said that his statement was addressed to "destructive
elements."
Premier Sargsyan made a statement during a briefing on Wednesday at
the National Assembly, saying that those who do not cooperate with
the ruling Republican Party "would end up with a broken trough." The
statement was immediately qualified as a warning to coalition partner
Prosperous Armenia party. Speculations last week were that the party
was going to either withdraw from the coalition or announce its
support of (Republican Party head) Serzh Sargsyan's candidacy.
Prosperous Armenia Party representatives, however, have restrained
from commenting on this statement.
"The context of my statement was clear, because I have quoted of
the well known statement made by the president saying that we want
to build bridges of cooperation with the opposition. I believe that
the upcoming challenges that we face show that the cooperation is
extremely necessary. We have capacities and abilities not to allow
tremors in the republic [Armenia]," the premier said.
Referring to the cooperation with coalition partners Prosperous Armenia
and Orinats Yerkir (Country of Law) parties, Sargsyan said that they
"have always been led by the principle of keeping solidarity, and
have done everything to make that cooperation succeed."
"The Republican Party could have made the authority all alone by
itself, however, the president of Armenia, being loyal to the
principles suggested by him, always prefers cooperation," the
premier said.
Political analyst Yervand Bozoyan told ArmeniaNow that it was obvious
that the premier's statement had referred to the Prosperous Armenia
Party.
"But because he [premier] could not 'digest' that, that is to say,
the authorities could not threaten Prosperous Armenia by that, he
decided to connect his statement with the opposition, because it was
much easier to do that," Bozoyan said.
