HEAD OF ARMENIAN DELEGATION TO PACE COULD BECOME NEW PARLIAMENTARY SPEAKER

David Arutyunian, who currently heads the standing committee on legal
affairs at the Armenian parliament and the Armenian delegation at the
Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE), could be nominated
for parliamentary speaker, Armenian media have reported.
Armenian parliamentary speaker Ovik Abramian resigned on Tuesday
evening.
"I am resigning. The Republican Party has proposed that I be the
chief of the party's campaign staff for the upcoming parliamentary
elections. I have offered to leave the speaker's office and concentrate
on building the campaign staff," Abramian told journalists on Tuesday,
following a meeting of the Republican Party's executive body led by
President Serzh Sargsyan.
Armenia will hold parliamentary elections in 2012.
