GOVERNMENT ESTABLISHES ARMENIAN FRUITS COMPANY TO BOOST EXPORTS

YEREVAN, November 3. / ARKA /. The Armenian government adopted on
Thursday a decision to establish a fully government-owned Armenian
Fruits company that will work to introduce modern technologies
in horticulture and boost export of fruits and nuts. Agricultural
minister Sergo Karapetyan said the establishment of the company is
stipulated by a program designed to create agricultural capacities.
"The main objective of the company will be to promote economic
development in rural areas, reduce rural poverty and increase incomes
of small producers through growing high-yielding varieties of fruits
and nuts," the minister said.
Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan said the government has great
expectations from this program, hoping to see an increase in production
through the use of new technology and planning.
The government has earmarked $1.7 million for this company~Rs
authorized capital. The $52 million program to create agricultural
capacities is being implemented in collaboration with International
Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD)n. It is aiming to reduce
poverty in rural areas. Its main goal is to increase incomes and
living standards in rural areas through the establishment of orchards.
Of the total amount $13.5 million will come from IFAD, $20 million from
OPEC Fund, $3.5 million from the government of Denmark for consulting
services . The share of the government is $11 million and $3 million
will be contributed by communities.
