YEREVAN. - The environmental assessment toward building a hydro power
plant (HPP) on Trchkan Fall is canceled, and the soil category on
the upper part of the Fall is changed, Nature Protection Minister
Aram Harutyunyan on Friday stated at the National Assembly.
He informed that if the developer wishes to build an HPP, the waste
water discharge must not be carried out from the upper, but rather from
the lower part of the Fall. In this case, however, a new assessment
will be conducted. The machinery is already removed from nearby the
Fall, the Minister stated.
As a result of protests by environmental organizations, the Government
on Thursday declared Trchkan Fall a special protection area.
