KARAVAN CULTURAL CENTER TO DELIVER "RHYTHMS OF A NEW ARMENIA"

Practice at Karavan.
Glendale, Calif. - Tears, pain, injury, frustration, diet, fatigue,
perspiration, endless hours of class and rehearsal, and all the
agony a dancer encounters during practice - and all for what? -
Just one performance, the exact moment when the main curtain rises,
the lights hit the stage and the first note of music is heard.
These are the emotions found at Karavan Cultural Center as it prepares
for its spectacular show set to premiere at the legendary Alex
Theatre in Glendale. Symbolically entitled "Rhythms," this performance
scheduled for November 12, 2011 represents the rhythmic beats of both
music and heart; a pounding pulse, a tremorous tempo, equally felt
and delivered by an outstanding cast of one hundred dancers.
Guest artists from Vienna State Ballet, Israel Ballet, the National
Ballet of Armenia, Los Angeles Ballet Theatre, and Creations Dance
Theatre join the dancers of Karavan Dance Studio to showcase a
variety of dance styles with live musical accompaniment. Soloists and
ensemble members alike, under the artistic direction of father and
son masterminds Rouben and Edgar Nikolian bring to the stage passion,
technique, beauty, and character.
When Rouben Nikolian, a prolific soloist of Barekamutyun Dance Ensemble
of Armenia, founded Karavan in 2000, his sole mission was to bring a
professional dance school to the community and provide a safe haven
for children who were blessed with the appreciation for the arts. He
only dreamed that one day, his son, who was establishing his own
professional career first in Munich and later Vienna would join him
in this creative process. After much acclaimed success in Europe,
Edgar brought his talent to Los Angeles, where he continues to shine
on stage as a guest soloist. The recipient of numerous awards and
the notable recognition as "Dancer of the Year," Edgar Nikolyan now
delivers his skill to the determined students of Karavan Dance Studio.
The Nikolians, having the experience of debuting on the world's most
prestigious stages instill in their students not only the disciplinary
element of dance, but more so, cultural awareness and sentimental
humanity which are evident in every movement and emotion portrayed
through their dance.
The memorable performance, symbolically scheduled at the 20th
anniversary of Independence of the Republic of Armenia, celebrates
the survival and promising future of an ancient and striving nation;
a nation with a complex yet heroic history, a land which has been
destined to religious and political wars, massacres, and earthquakes
-and today lives to dance about it.
Throughout its history, caravans of deported Armenian refugees have
uprooted the Diaspora. Today, our very own Karavan, which aims to
preserve the Armenian culture through its music and dance, serves a
vital role in the community and is evidences of the strength of an
undying heritage.
Karavan Dance Studio will also celebrate its own decade of achievement,
as it marks ten years of excellence. As father and son once destined
with an Armenian's devastating fate of separation unite years later
to debut their tenth Anniversary Gala performance, they exemplify
the words of William Saroyan "...For when two of them meet anywhere
in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia."
On November 12, 2011, the artistic staff of Karavan Cultural Center
invites all lovers of the art and patriots of a strong Diaspora to
witness the creation of Rouben and Edgar Nikolyan's "New Armenia"
through movement, emotion, music and "Rhythms."
