SCIENCE IN ARMENIA AGING

Science in Armenia is aging. Samvel Haroutiunyan, Head of the National
Committee for Science of Armenia, made such unpromising forecast at
a seminar on the Bologna Process Principles.
He sounded an alarm on deficit of scientists at the age of 35-40. "It
is very sad. It is the very age for the most productive research
activity," he said. Haroutiunyan explained the situation with the
on-going brain drain from the country. Yet 20 years ago, he said, the
average age of researchers in the country was 40, while now it is 60.
"In this light, I highlight the necessity of science "rejuvenation"
programs through increase of salaries, opening of more summer schools
which are a good platform for establishment of ties with western
colleagues," Haroutiunyan said. He said that the budget for 2013
envisages a program of extra payment to 100 best young researchers. "I
hope, that program will be approved," he said.
The seminar dedicated to the Bologna Process Principles was held in
Yerevan on Nov 4-6.
