Today the minister of foreign affairs of Georgia, Grigol Vashadze,
arrived in Armenia, tomorrow, his Iranian counterpart Ali Akbar Salehi
will arrive in Armenia. No details are provided on what the foreign
ministers will discuss here, but obviously the main point will be
the upcoming regional developments, the awareness preparations for
which have already begun.
First of all, it deals with the increasing international pressure on
Iran. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report is to be
released soon, in which perhaps it will be noted that Iran is coming
close to developing a nuclear weapon which, for its part, can cause
the strong backlash of Israel. The President of France has already
ruled out use of force against Iran but threats of an operation can
force Iran to make strategic concessions.
In particular, it concerns the position of Iran on the Trans-Caspian
gas pipeline which is to be laid out beneath the Caspian Sea from
Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan. Baku has already signed an agreement on
gas transportation to Europe, Turkmenistan is also ready, but the
Caspian pipe is not in place yet. Iran is the key Caspian country
and is against the layout of the pipe. Threats to use force may make
Tehran more amenable.
The visit of the Georgian Foreign Minister to Armenia may be related
to this circumstance. By the way, the minister of transport of
Georgia is also visiting Armenia. It is unknown what new projects
will be discussed but the project of road construction (automobile
and railways) which will connect the Black Sea with the Persian Gulf
through Georgia, Armenia and Iran is still urgent.
The Iranian Minister evidently wants to know Armenia's opinion in case
Tehran enters into confrontation with the Western community. And the
Georgian Ministers are trying to learn whether Yerevan can build its
part of the road, or believing Russia's promises to invest in road
construction, it will reject "alternative funds".
