Armenia has missed out on the 2011 European title after a bitter
last-round defeat to Germany at the Team Championship that ended in
Greece on Friday.
On the ninth and final day of play at the tournament in the Aegean Sea
resort of Porto Carras FIDE's current No. 3 player Levon Aronian and
company needed a straight victory to be declared the continent's new
champions. But the 1.5-2.5 defeat left it even outside the top three.
The victory over Armenia took Germany to the first place among 38
competing nations, with Azerbaijan and Hungary finishing second and
third, respectively.
The same Armenian squad (also including GMs Sergei Movsesian, Vladimir
Akopian, Gabriel Sargissian and Robert Hovhannisyan) managed to win
the World Championship title in China in July.
In the women's section at the European Team Chess Championship Armenia
ended with a draw against Poland 2-2, finishing seventh among 28
participants.
