YEREVAN. - Ruling coalition's Prosperous Armenia Party's nominee
Vardan Ghalumyan, 38, won Sunday's mayoral elections in Ijevan
city.Ghalumyan's rival, the coalition's Republican Party of Armenia
candidate Varuzhan Nersisyan, 49, who is the city's mayor for the
past twelve years, lost to Ghalumyan by approximately 1,652 votes.
To note, elections between the two nominees were conducted under
a fairly tense atmosphere, and the police had even detained several
people. Two men were called to the local police precinct because there
was news of election bribe distribution, but they were subsequently
released, since that news was not confirmed, the Police Department
informed.
