YEREVAN.- UK's official position on the Armenian Genocide issue has
not changed, UK Ambassador to Armenia Charles Lonsdale told journalists
    on Monday.

The Ambassador who is completing his diplomatic mission this year
added that the position would hardly be different with the change
    of ambassadors.

"We understand significance of the event for each Armenian. We
remember and commemorate the massacres of the Armenians in the Ottoman
Turkey. The British government at that time condemned these events,"
    he said.

At the same time the Ambassador stressed that for UK is now more
important for the governments of Armenia and Turkey return to these
    events and review them.

As regards "football diplomacy" between Armenia and Turkey, Lonsdale
said the relations had become more open and there is a desire to
communicate. Turkish political analyst consider trip to Armenia
obligatory, he added. On the whole, UK Ambassador considers that time
    is needed to achieve results.

In October 2009 Armenia and Turkey signed protocols in Zurich to
normalize diplomatic relations between the states. The documents
had to be ratified in both countries' parliaments. However, in
2010 the Armenian president suspended the process due to Turkey's
    non-constructive stance.
