Amnesty International criticized Azerbaijan in connection with the
use of disproportionate force against protesters in March and April
    of this year.

The organization's report runs that the peaceful demonstrators
demanded democratic reforms from the authorities, but instead they
were arrested, as well as beaten. 17 people were sentenced to up to
3 years under arrest in Azerbaijan.

It is noted that the West failed to apply effective methods to provide
political freedom and human rights in Azerbaijan.

Human rights activists say the were excited about the events in the
Arab world and tried to demand reforms but the number of protesters
was not so big as to threaten the regime.

The report accuses the Azerbaijani authorities of criminalizing
peaceful demonstrations. Those who made online invitations to
participate in protests were identified and sentenced on the basis
of false accusations. Their trials lasted for only 10-15 minutes.

Amnesty International stresses that Baku threatened the representatives
of the mass media and human rights activists making it clear that
"any attempt to raise the public opinion against the ruling regime
    will be prevented".

Azerbaijani authorities have not commented on the report yet.
