Azerbaijani politician Araz Alizade has said that Talysh separatist
Alikram Humbatov must be mad to attend a conference in Armenia.
"Alikram Humbatov must have completely lost his mind if he is taking
part in an anti-Azerbaijani event in Yerevan," Alizade, co-chair of
the Social Democratic Party of Azerbaijan, told 1news.az.
"This man is not respected even by his relatives, not to mention all
the Talysh people who have never supported and will never support him,"
Alizade continued.
Former army officer Alikram Humbatov announced the creation of the
Talysh-Mughan republic in southeast Azerbaijan in the summer of 1993
and declared himself its president. The republic was short-lived
and Humbatov was sentenced to life imprisonment after Heydar Aliyev
came to power in 1995. Humbatov was pardoned in 2004, stripped of
Azerbaijani citizenship and moved to Holland.
"This man seems to have run out of money again and to want to
sell himself. But Armenians themselves are stupid if they think
that the likes of Humbatov and Fakhraddin Abbaszade represent the
Talysh people. So, this whole idea of the Armenians is worthless,"
Alizade said.
He said that the Talysh people had always defended Azerbaijani
statehood and that they had fought with dignity in Karabakh for the
territorial integrity of the Azerbaijani state.
"Humbatov and his clique were ignominiously expelled from Lankaran by
the people who rallied around President Heydar Aliyev," Alizade said.
"Azerbaijan is a powerful state and all nations and nationalities
living here are true patriots of the Motherland."
Humbatov is attending the second international conference on Talysh
studies, organized by Garnik Asatryan, editor-in-chief of the magazine
"Iran and the Caucasus" which is published in Boston. The conference
in Yerevan is thought to be supported by the Armenian secret service,
