IAEA DOESN'T INTEND TO REGULATE THE OPERATION OF THE ARMENIAN NPP

    Mediamax, Armenia
    Nov 15 2011

Yerevan/Mediamax/. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) doesn't
intend to regulate the operation of the Armenian NPP.

"Nuclear safety is a national responsibility and that the IAEA is not
an international nuclear regulator", head of the IAEA press service
Giovanni Verlini said this in his interview to Mediamax.

Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Taner Yildiz stated
after the Van earthquake on October 23 that "Turkey plans to take legal
measures against outdated nuclear power plants worldwide including
    the Armenian NPP".

"IAEA's role is to help its member states, upon their request, to
improve their nuclear safety practices and not that of an international
nuclear regulator", said Giovanni Verlini in his interview to Mediamax.

At the same time he noted that IAEA does not comment on the exchanges
    they have with member states.

As for the Armenian NPP, IAEA's spokesman referred to the OSART mission
report. The OSART mission concluded that "nothing extraordinary"
was found in the Armenian NPP.
