ARMENIAN SPEAKER RESIGNS TO JOIN ELECTION CAMPAIGN OF RULING PARTY

Speaker of the Armenian parliament Onik Abramyan has resigned from
the post he occupied since September 29, 2008. On Monday afternoon
the speaker announced his resignation at a meeting of the Armenian
National Assembly.
On November 1 Abramyan was nominated to head election headquarters
of the Armenian ruling party - the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA)
in the run up to parliamentary election due next spring. Abramyan
was nominated for the post of the RPA election headquarters chief
by Armenian President and RPA leader Serzh Sargsyan. Accepting the
proposal Abramyan declared he would resign from the post of parliament
chairman so as to fully concentrate on the coming election.
According to the rules of procedure of the National Assembly a
speaker's resignation is considered accepted if the speaker confirms
his resignation within five days since it is announced.
