An international conference on "Regional Security Dynamics in the
South Caucasus" kicked off in Yerevan today. It has brought together
security experts from the United States, Canada, Great Britain,
Romania and Russia.
Experts from different scientific centers of the world discuss issues
related to the security of our region.
Messages of President Serzh Sargsyan and Defense Minister Seyran
Ohanyan were read out at the event. President Sargsyan noted, in part,
that "one of the pivotal challenges facing the region is the existence
of unsolved conflicts, which need a comprehensive and final solution."
"The arms race incited by Azerbaijan is a matter of concern not only
for Armenia and the South Caucasus, but also for the larger region."
"In this regard, Armenia has to pay great attention to the
modernization of the defense system as an important factor for
restraining the military ambitions and ensure stability in the
region," the President said in a statement, calling the attention
of the experts to the new energy programs, which, according to him,
should not be used to distort the balance of forces in the region.
Touching upon the Armenian-Turkish relations, President Sargsyan
stressed that "security and development are axioms in the modern
world." "We were guided by these reasons, when we initiated the
process of normalization of the Armenian-Turkish relations in 2008
as the first step for establishment of diplomatic relations without
preconditions and opening of the border."
"Armenia is committed to the principles it proclaimed at the beginning
of the process. It should be noted that Turkey needs to demonstrate
political will to realize the international obligations," Serzh
Sargsyan said in the statement.
Head of the National Strategic Research Institute after Drastamat
Kanayan Hayk Kotanjian does not rule out that the conference will
may grounds for international cooperation.
