Baku. Azer Mustafayev - APA. France approved Turkey's proposal to
establish a joint commission of historians to investigate the events of
1915. APA reports that Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said it
at the press conference held with French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe.
Ahmet Davutoglu said President of France Nicolas Sarkozy supported
Turkey's proposal to establish a joint commission of historians.
"Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan sent a letter to Armenian
President on this theme. We are ready to discuss our history and the
history of other countries basing on the principle of mutual respect,"
he said.
Hinting at the fact that the events of 1915 were regarded by the
French parliament as "genocide" against Armenians, French Foreign
Minister Alain Juppe said: "This is an important issue for Turkey,
but at the same time painful period for Armenians. Therefore, these
tragic events should be assessed within the framework of the joint
commission of historians.
Armenians can also participate in this process," he said.
