In the aftermath of two devastating earthquakes magnitude 7.2 and
5.6, Armenian Saint Cross Church of Akhtamar has been partially
damaged. According to "Ermenihaber.am" news site the dome of the
church has been cracked.
A representative from the group who reconstructed the church Adnan
Vural said the cracks are weak and it's possible to reconstruct it.
"The earthquakes didn't seriously damage the church, and the cracks
can be repaired," said Vural.
St. Cross Church of Akhtamar Island, Lake Van was built in 915-921
during the reign of King of Vaspurakan Gagik Artsruni. The architect of
the construction was Manvel. In 2007 the Turkish authorities repaired
the church and reopened as a museum. In 2011 official Ankara allowed
to hold services once a year in the church.
