ARMENIANS CALL ON SARGSYAN TO RESIGN

Armenian protesters march in the capital Yerevan, demanding the
resignation of President Serzh Sargsyan, March 2, 2011.

Thousands of people in Armenia have taken to the streets of the capital
Yerevan, calling on Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan to step down.

Nearly three thousand anti-government Armenians staged a demonstration
in Yerevan on Friday in support of Sargsyan's main opposition, the
    Armenian National Congress (ANC).

"Serzh Sargsyan seized power by falsifying the results of elections,"
said a declaration by the ANC which was read out at the rally by the
    bloc's coordinator, Levon Zurabian.

Leader of the ANC, Armenia's former president Levon Ter-Petrosian,
has been calling for early presidential and parliamentary elections,
as well as the release of people whom the opposition considers as
    political prisoners.

The opposition is also calling for the prosecution of those responsible
for the deaths of 10 activists in the protests that followed the 2008
    presidential election.

In Armenia's 2008 presidential election, Sargsyan, the country's'
former prime minister, claimed victory over his rivals by winning
    55.7 percent of the votes.

The opposition, however, claimed that the election was rigged to
ensure Sargsyan's victory, while foreign observers said the vote was
mostly in line with international standards.
