ARMENIA'S RESPONSE TO AZERBAIJAN'S PROVOCATIONS MAKES AN IMPRESSION OF A REASONABLE POLICY

Armenia's response to Azerbaijan's sniper provocations makes an
impression of a reasonable policy, not just thoughtless steps,
Director of the Caucasus Institute Alexander Iskandaryan said at
today's roundtable in Yerevan.
To recall, on November Private of the NKR Defense Army Aren Simonyan
(1992) was killed by an Azeri sniper while on duty on a battle
position in the southern part of the frontline. Later on November
20 another soldier of the NKR Defense Army Miran Markaryan (1992)
was killed by the Azeri party while on duty on a battle position in
the southeastern direction. When commenting on the given incidents,
Armenian Defense Minister's Spokesperson David Karapetyan said that
the vicious actions by Azeri snipers once again demonstrate that
Baku has not learnt lessons from its previous adventures and fails
to care for the security of its soldiers. He said that the Armenia's
party's response to killing of every Armenian soldier will not be
proportional and that the careless Command of the Azerbaijani Armed
Forces is well aware of Armenia's previous retaliatory actions.
"The sniper war unleashed by Azerbaijan is not eventuality, but
regularity given the fact that the current situation has been lasting
for many years. However, the new element in this process is Armenia's
steps being taken in response to the Azerbaijani provocations",
he said.
For his part, Chairman of the NKR Public Council on Foreign Policy and
Security Masis Mailyan said that the Helsinki Principles are out of
date, and the world has changed. He stressed numerous new approaches,
which can be applied in the Karabakh peace process. According to him,
the peace process and the process of international recognition of
the NKR should be held in parallel. He added that Armenia, Karabakh
and Diaspora should work more actively in this dimension.
"At the same time, a timeout is shortly expected in the Karabakh
peace process though a possible war is much spoken about. I am sure
that the war can be prevented via international recognition of the NKR.
Moreover, a possible war will have its disastrous consequences,
first of all, for Azerbaijan. The OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs should
reckon with the Azeri policy "either peace on our terms or war" by
laying the whole responsibility for the tension on the contact line
only on Baku", Mailyan said.
