Armenia: No bid from Inter RAO UES to cease nuke plant mgmt

Armenia has not received an official application from Russian electric
power holding Inter RAO UES over its intention to prematurely
discontinue its management of the Armyanskaya nuclear power plant,
Vagram Petrosyan, director of the Armenian Scientific Research
Institute for Nuclear Plant Operation (Armatom), said Friday, RIA
Novosti reported.
Kommersant business daily reported on Thursday citing sources that
Inter RAO UES was seeking to cease managing the power plant and had
begun talks over the possibly transferring management to Russian
nuclear power corporation Rosatom.
The state-owned Armyanskaya nuclear plant currently has one power unit
with a capacity of 407.5 megawatts (MW) in operation. Inter RAO UES
has been managing the nuclear plant since 2003, with the agreement set
to expire in 2013. The plant produces around 40%-50% of Armenia's
total power output. Armenia currently plans to build a net power plant
equipped with a 1,000-MW power unit as an alternative to the
Armyanskaya plant. Construction is slated to begin in 2011, while the
launch of the unit is expected in 2017.
Inter RAO UES' early withdrawal from managing the plant is not
expected to affect the safety of the plant's operations, the chairman
of Armenia's State Nuclear Safety Regulatory Committee Ashot
Martirosyan said.
