A pro-opposition organization in Georgia has voiced its intention
to hold an anti-government protest on the day of French President
Nicolas Sarkozy's arrival in the country.
According to the Russian publication Vzglyad, the Georgian Academy, a
union of prominent public figures and scholars, has issued a statement
stressing the importance of the protest on October 7. It quoted Temur
Naneishvili, a representative of the organization, as saying that
Europe must be aware that the Georgian authorities do not enjoy a
universal support in the country.
He told the Georgian new agency Pirveli that their proposal is just
an initiative that will lead to a real protest if backed by other
organizations.
Sarkozy is to begin his regional visit on October 6, arriving first
in Yerevan. On October 7, he is expected to deliver an address on
Tbilisi's Freedom Square together with his Georgian counterpart,
Mikheil Saakashvili. On Saturday, October 8, the French leader will
travel to Azerbaijan.
