SEVERAL ARMENIAN NGOS APPLY TO CILICIAN CATHOLICOS TO SOLICIT FOR PROVIDING ZHIRAYR SEFILYAN WITH ARMENIAN CITIZENSHIP

Several Armenian NGOs have addressed an open letter to Catholicos
of the Great House of Cilicia Aram I and asked him to solicit for
providing Zhirayr Sefilyan, hero of the Karabakh war, former commander
of Shushi battalion, with Armenian citizenship. The authors of the
letter complain of the unjust position of the Armenian authorities
with respect to Sefilyan and point out the fact that Sefilyan has been
denied citizenship for many times. "By denying citizenship to Sefilyan
in his motherland, the country's authorities undermine the idea of
national unity, which unifies Armenians worldwide regardless of their
partisan, political, and religious views. What is the worth of the
"Come Back Home" program of the Diaspora Ministry, if the Armenian,
who defended his motherland, is denied citizenship in this motherland",
    the letter says.

The authors also point out that the given issue has already ceased
to be considered the personal problem of Sefilyan and has acquired
a political shading. "We ask you, as the symbol of unity of the
Armenians worldwide, to use your strong and authoritative word and
contribute to a fair settlement of this problem", the letter says.

The letter has been signed by Zaruhi Muradyan, member of the Artists'
Union of Armenia, ethnographer Hranush Kharatyan, publicist Sona
Arshunetsi (Brussels), and the well-known actor Yervand Manaryan.

To note, Zhirayr Sefilyan's applications for Armenian citizenship
have repeatedly rejected by the leadership of the country. Sefilyan
himself considers this step of the authorities to be an attempt to
hinder his participation in the elections in Armenia.
