A Yerevan court ruled on Wednesday to extend the detention period of
opposition activist Tigran Arakelyan.
The Court of First Instance of Kentron and Nork-Marash administrative
district satisfied a motion by the Special Investigation Service to
extend the arrest period of Arakelyan for two months.
Tigran Arakelyan, together with other youth activists of the opposition
alliance Armenian National Congress (HAK), was arrested on August 9
over a scuffle with police officers.
Tigran Arakelyan is accused of "hooliganism against a representative
of law-enforcement body". Arakelyan, however, denies the charge.
All the other opposition activists under the same case have already
been released.
Following the arrest of youth activists the HAK suspended the political
dialogue with representatives of the ruling coalition.
