American Armenian Senator Joseph Simitian didn't know in Baku where
he was taken
After his meeting with NKR President Bako Sahakian, Senator Simitian
gave an interview to journalists.
According to him, his visit to Artsakh was successful; especially
impressive were the achievements for the passed years. An American
Armenian, Mr. Simitian had special warm feelings in Artsakh. According
to him, the readiness of the Artsakh Armenians to achieve the peaceful
settlement of the conflict, surely meeting the international norms,
is really appreciable. The Senator paid special significance to
the fact that in the context of the processes within the OSCE Minsk
Group, the voice of Artsakh sounds loudly. J. Simitian was elected
Senator from the state of California and represents about a million
of people. His visit is aimed at acquainting the Californian people
and authorities with all is taking place here, especially that all
the information, according to him, is got from the original source -
the state's President and other officials.
Joseph Simitian told about his visit to the Stepanakert Memorial
Complex, noting that a deeply penetrating feeling had overtaken him
there. People gave their lives for the sake of the homeland's freedom
and independence.
Answering the question on his view on the arrangement of USA
President Obama and Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan on 'reviving' the
Armenian-Turkish Protocols, the Senator answered; "It is the duty
of the central authorities, and I am a member of the Californian
state Senate, consequently, I have no similar authority". Then, he
added that after visiting this region and Turkey, he paid special
significance to fair peace for all the people and nations both in
the political and economic context. He recalled an American saying,
according to which the resolution of any issue should be mutually
beneficial, or, both parties should be winners in that process. And
he believes that if all the nations and states follow this logic,
much more favorable conditions will be provided for everybody.
Senator Simitian emphasized that his meetings with the NKR President,
Prime Minister, Parliament Speaker, and Acting Foreign Minister had
passed in a cordial atmosphere.
The Senator was also asked the following question, "According to
the mass media information, before visiting Artsakh, you were in
Azerbaijan, where you visited the Shahids Cemetery. What feelings
did you have that moment and wasn't it really difficult for you?" The
Senator explained that he didn't know where he was taken. It happened
so, but he didn't want, in any way, to drive the Artsakh people in an
awkward situation. According to him, very important is the fact that
as an Armenian, he headed the USA delegation and visited Turkey and
Azerbaijan in this status. "Surely, I knew that there may be certain
difficulties, maybe misunderstandings, but much more important is
that I am here today", emphasized the American Armenian Senator.
