BEIRUT: The Armenian State University of Economics in Yerevan granted
Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri an honorary doctorate in economics,
the National News Agency reported Wednesday.
The university's president welcomed Berri and described him as one
of Lebanon's greatest leaders and a man of dialogue and consent as
well as a friend to the Armenian people.
Berri expressed joy upon receiving the doctorate and said "this
title increases my responsibility in strengthening the ties between
the Lebanese and Armenians as well as parliamentary and cultural
relations between the two countries."
Berri called on both the Lebanese and Armenian governments to support
the exchange of products between the two countries in a way that
spares consumers transport costs.
"Lebanon can be Armenia's gate to the Arab World while Armenia can
be Lebanon's gate to several former Soviet Republics," Berri said,
calling for reinforcing tourism and educational ties in addition to
political and economic ones.
