SERZH SARGSYAN PREFERRED CANDIDATE FOR ARMENIAN PRESIDENCY - ARMAN MELIKYAN

A month ago, in discussing the roles played by the three Armenian
presidents, Arman Melikyan, ex-minister of foreign affairs of
Nagorno-Karabakh, said he would prefer Serzh Sargsyan.

"At present, this triangle is active. Now it is up to Serzh Sargsyan
to decide to support the dialogue and it is up to him to support
Robert Kocharyan," Melikyan told journalists Oct. 7. Things will go
on like this, as no major political factor has changed, he added.

The peak of political activities by the opposition Armenian National
Congress (ANC) is in the past. Even active ANC members are now
alienating themselves from it. ANC Chairman Levon Ter-Petrosyan has
not become a symbol of unity nor will he ever become, Melikyan said.

Losing supporters and rebukes heard during the ANC-staged rallies
are evidence of problems within the political force, Melikyan said.

"It has until recently been idealized, and this idealization has
turned into disappointment. This opposition within the ANC was to
be expected. The forces that fell away from it, free democrats,
for example, will not become a solid political force either. Serzh
Sargsyan will remain a preferred candidate unless an alternative
political factor comes onto the scene," Melikyan said.

What Ter-Petrosyan was about to agree to - return of territories and
suspended status for Nagorno-Karabakh - Georgian President Mikheil
Saakashvili did by means of war: he severed relations with Russia
and lost his influence in Georgia, Melikyan said.
