YEREVAN. - This year Armenian brandy yielded its place to the
Azerbaijani one in the Russian market; it was consumed less and
occupied second place, Yerkir daily writes.
"This fact is surprising, since it is known that there are few
vineyards in Azerbaijan. And even in Azerbaijan SSR, the vineyards
were primarily centralized in Artsakh [Karabakh] and the liberated
territories. Furthermore, according to wine and brandy makers,
Azerbaijani brandy is low quality. The brandy's alcohol is produced
through distillation of raisins imported from Iran and local wheat.
There is information that Azerbaijan is resorting to deception,
as it is mixing into its 'raisin-wheat' alcohol the brandy alcohol
imported from Spain. And this is what it exports to Russia as
Azerbaijani brandy.
By the way, according to winemakers, the Azerbaijanis were never known
for vodka and wine production. What is more, the Azerbaijani wine,
as such, does not exist," Yerkir writes.
