This year, Armenian brandy has given way to Azerbaijani in the Russian
market, showing the second highest consumption level.
The newspaper is surprised at this fact. Azerbaijan does not have many
vineyards. In soviet times, most of Azerbaijan's vineyards were located
in Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as in the territories under Armenians
control now. Experts say that Azeri brandy is of low quality - the
alcohol is made of raisins imported from Iran and local grain.
According to the newspaper, Azerbaijan imports alcohol from Spain to
mix it with home-made alcohol. This mixture is exported to Russia
as Azerbaijani brandy. Winemakers say that Azerbaijanis have never
produced high-quality wine or vodka. Moreover, Azerbaijani wine does
not exist.
