The Football Federation of Armenia has appealed against the verdict
passed by referee Eduardo Iturralde Gonzalez during the Oct 11
Ireland-Armenia decider, President of the FFA Ruben Hayrapetyan writes
on his Facebook profile.
To remind, Gonzalez penalized Armenia's goalkeeper Roman Berezovsky
with a red card for an alleged handball outside the scoring area.
The recording of the episode has shown that there was no handball on
Berezovsky's part. Even more, in his interview to BBC Irish forward
Simon Cox has said that it was he who handed the ball.
Anyway, by his verdict Gonzalez gave Ireland one-man advantage and
bereft Armenia of the chance to qualify for the play-offs.
In his Facebook message Hayrapetyan says: "Dear football lovers,
I would like to thank you for continuing to support our team even
though it has failed. By doing this you have proved that you are
real football lovers. We are proud of you and happy to have such
supporters. Our players are strong and were worthy of victory. As
regards the referee, we have already appealed against his verdict. I
don't care if that third-rater is punished or not. What I want is
that Berezovsky's red card be annulled.
Concerning the rumored possibility of an order on UEFA's part,
I assure you that there could be no order on UEFA's part. Michel
Platini is not the man who can do such a thing.
In the end of this year we will organize an official awarding ceremony
for our players. I would like to thank Armenians all over the world
and wish them to be patient and loyal to our team."
Meanwhile, passions have been high in Armenia during the last two
days. Our fans are indignant and are discussing the match everywhere,
first of all, on the internet. Some of them have created a special
Facebook community "We Hate Iturralde Gonzales" - a slogan that
reflects the prevalent moods among our fans.
