The National Democratic Union has bid for active participation in the
upcoming political process. The leader of this party and the chairman
of the Public Council, Vazgen Manukyan, and his present fellows or
former fellows who defected and created their own parties say they
are considering uniting and taking an active part in the political
life of Armenia.
The NDU is the party which "bid farewell" to the political life
after the presidential election of 2008. 2008 was an important year
in the political life of Armenia because the political sphere was
infiltrated. The NDU, Artashes Geghamyan and his party, some other
parties moving by inertia, finally were left out of the field. The
removal of these forces closing the sight of the society or lying on
the political life as a heavy burden can be considered as one of the
important results of Levon Ter-Petrosyan's political return.
Serzh Sargsyan hurried up to share the "laurels" for this achievement
because he gathered them in his camp, which finally revealed that
these forces are void and inadequate for the political field. After
all the government camp is a political dump, considering the apolitical
essence, structure and relations of this system.
But now a tendency of return from the "dump" is noticed. The NDU is
openly speaking about it, soon Geghamyan may join him, then Khosrov
Harutyunyan, then maybe Aram Gaspar Sargsyan, and who not.
Why? Has Serzh Sargsyan again picked them up from the "political dump"
to be able to toss them back to the political sphere and spread their
odor there or are these people dissatisfied with Serzh Sargsyan and
want to get a better package of benefits from him for the upcoming
process.
Perhaps we deal with the first option because these forces will
hardly have the capacity for the second option. The point is that
they do not present anything and cannot set any conditions through
their political activity in dealing with Serzh Sargsyan.
Apparently, Serzh Sargsyan dictates their political activity. But this
time they seem to have another function than the one they fulfilled
in the campaign of 2008. At that time, the function of these forces
was to hit Levon Ter-Petrosyan.
Now the problem has undergone a change stemming from the change of the
logic of political developments. Serzh Sargsyan is activating these
forces against Robert Kocharyan rather than against Ter-Petrosyan or
against both. But Kocharyan has hinted on his possible activity and
Serzh Sargsyan seems to consider his hint as a serious danger.
The point is that these "rising" forces will hardly be able to harm
Ter-Petrosyan. In this situation, only Levon Ter-Petrosyan can deal
a blow to him. In this respect, only Ter-Petrosyan can help Serzh
Sargsyan.
Meanwhile, the forces "rising" from the "political dump" may help Serzh
Sargsyan. The point is that when Kocharyan becomes essentially active,
it will not be convenient for Serzh Sargsyan to hit him through the
government. It may cause a split in the government and endanger the
entire system, Sargsyan and Kocharyan together.
Kocharyan may hit Ter-Petrosyan's opposition. But in that case,
there is other danger. The doubt about direct or indirect partnership
between Ter-Petrosyan and Serzh Sargsyan may deepen, resulting in an
atmosphere which will enable Kocharyan's return, at the same time,
weakening the social ground for Ter-Petrosyan's movement.
Therefore, the better option could be the so-called neutral criticism
of Kocharyan by the "third force" who himself is trying indirectly
to shape the "third" political pole. In other words, Serzh Sargsyan
seems to be trying to set the "third force" against Robert Kocharyan.
