independence.
The event, held at the Azerbaijani embassy in Russia, was attended

Addressing the event, Azerbaijan's ambassador to Russia, Polad

20 years of independence. He stressed that the main problem facing
the country was the liberation of Azerbaijani territories occupied
by Armenia.
The ambassador said that the strategic partnership between Azerbaijan
and Russia had become a guarantor of stability in the region. He
praised the efforts of Russian President Dmitriy Medvedev to settle
the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict:
"We do not lose hope for a peaceful solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh
problem, and we can see Russia's active work in tackling the problem
within the framework of international law. We believe that the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict will be solved with the help of Russia."
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Grigoriy Karasin told the event that
cooperation between Azerbaijan and Russia was rapidly developing in
a number of fields.
According to Karasin, Russia sees Azerbaijan as a reliable partner,
able to conduct a broad constructive dialogue:
"The mutual trust and respect existing between Presidents Ilham Aliyev
and Dmitriy Medvedev stands at the basis of the cooperation between our
countries. Our links provide a basis for strengthening the strategic
partnership of neighbourliness and cooperation, and act as a factor
of stability and security in the Caucasus and the Caspian Sea.
And this meets the interests of our states and the desire of both
peoples."
