"Azerbaijan should have an excellent chance to represent itself in
the Security Council", Thomas Ambrosio, US analyst on South Caucasus
issues, an Associate Professor of political science at the North
Dakota State University, said in an interview with APA's Washington,
DC correspondent.
He believes, Azerbaijan's chances seem pretty good, with Moscow
backing Azerbaijan's candidacy.
"Armenian-American organizations appear to be fighting it and it will
be interesting what Washington does", he mentioned.
According to the analyst, assuming one of the rotating seats in the
UN Security Council is more important symbolically than politically.
"In reality, most decisions by the UN SC are taken by the five
permanent members and then presented to the 10 rotating members.
Nonetheless, the prominence of the body can only help to enhance the
prominence of Azerbaijan on the world stage", he said, adding, it may
also have a more substantive benefit for Azerbaijan: "Sitting on the
Security Council may allow Baku to help set the agenda of the Security
Council and place the Nagorno-Karabakh issue on the world's agenda".
