PONTIFICAL BANQUET IN HONOR OF
HIS HOLINESS CATHOLICOS ARAM I A HISTORIC EVENING
On the evening of Sunday, October 16, 2011, a record number 1250
sponsors and friends, along with a number of public officials and
dignitaries, gathered at the Universal Hilton for the Pontifical Banquet in
honor of His Holiness Catholicos Aram I.
With the singing of the "Hrashapar" hymn, His Holiness entered the
hall as guests were pleasantly surprised that the Pontiff was joined by His
Beatitude Bechara Rai, Patriarch of the Maronite Church, and Bishops. The
procession included H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, Clergy,
and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. The head table included Consul General of
Armenia Grigor Hovhannissian and his wife, acting Consul General of Lebanon
Madonna Aoun Ghazal and her husband, H.E. Archbishop Yeprem Tabakian, H.E.
Archbishop Vatche Hovsepian, Rev. Joe Matossian, Minister of the Armenian
Evangelical Union of N. America, Very Rev. Fr. Armenag Bedrossian,
representing Very Rev. Fr. Krikor Chahinian, Rector of the Armenian Catholic
Church, Central Executive member Mr. Khajag Dikijian, Executive Council
Chair Mrs. Rima Boghossian, and ARF Central Committee Chair Mr.Avedik
Izmirlian.
At the start of the evening, the Prelate announced with joy that His
Beatitude Patriarch Bechara Rai had reciprocated the visit of His Holiness a
day earlier, and invited him to deliver his remarks.
Speaking in Arabic, Patriarch Rai expressed thanks for the
opportunity to participate in the Pontifical Banquet , and after greeting
the Mayor and official guests, went on to speak about the close relation
between Antelias and the Maronite Patriarchate at Bkerke. He spoke with
pride at the strong bond Lebanese citizens in the Diaspora feel with their
homeland, Lebanon, noting that Armenians are among that group. Speaking of
the virtues of the Armenian people, His Beatitude stated that after
martyrdom the Armenian people rose again, and that makes them great people.
Patriarch Rai commended all those who stand behind and lend their support to
the progress of Lebanon and the Middle East, and in conclusion emphasized
how crucial the presence of Christians in the Middle East is and how
important it is to spread the light of the Bible and the work of the Church
in the region.
Responding in French, His Holiness welcomed His Beatitude,
considered his presence an expression of respect towards the Armenian people
and the Armenian Church, and stated that collaboration between the Armenian
and Lebanese people is not limited to Lebanon, rather it can be found across
the globe. His Holiness noted that the Armenian and Maronite Churches both
share in the responsibility of maintaining Christianity in the Middle East
as well as encouraging Muslim-Christian dialogue. In conclusion, His
Holiness reaffirmed the dedication of the Armenian people to ensuring the
freedom and independence of Lebanon, and wished that the shared mission of
His Beatitude and himself are successfully realized.
The official program began with the singing of national anthems.
Mrs. Vartoug Avedikian sang the Lebanese national anthem, accompanied by
Mrs. Hourig Abdulian on the piano, and Ms. Lara Gharibian performed the
American and Armenian anthems.
Following the blessing of tables by His Holiness, Deacon Mark
Shirin, who was the Pontifical Banquet sponsor and Master of Ceremonies,
welcomed the guests and acknowledged the public officials present, including
Congressman Adam Schiff, State Senator Kevin De Leon, Assembly member
Anthony Portantino, Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich, Los
Angeles City Council President Eric Garcetti and member Paul Krekorian,
Glendale City Council member Ara Najarian, Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogart and
City Council members, and Judge Armand Arabian.
Central Executive member Mr. Khajag Dikijian was then invited to
deliver his remarks. Mr. Dikijian, who is also the Chair of the Pontifical
Visit Steering Committee, brought to the attention of the guests the
extraordinary profile of His Holiness as a church leader, author, and
intermediary in inter-church and inter-faith relations, and welcomed the
guests to rise and raise a glass in honor of His Holiness.
Executive Council Chair Mrs. Rima Boghossian remarked that the
Prelacy is honored to be graced with the Pontifical Visit of His Holiness
and for shepherd and flock to be in direct communication, and affirmed that
our community will heed the guidance and suggestions of His Holiness to
overcome any concerns we may face.
Mayor Villaraigosa was then invited to share his thoughts. The
Mayor lauded the role of His Holiness on the international level, noting how
the Pontiff headed the World Council of Churches as Chairmen for two terms.
On behalf of the United States of America, a nation of religious freedom, he
welcomed His Holiness as a faith leader. Speaking of the Armenian people,
the Mayor noted that after the dark days of the Genocide, the Armenian
people spread to all parts of the world and with their faith they
reestablished themselves and today, the Armenians of Los Angeles contribute
greatly to the community and to society.
Following the Mayor's remarks, His Holiness was presented with a
certificate of welcome by Supervisor Mike Antonovich, and Congressman Adam
Schiff welcomed the Pontiff on behalf of his colleagues in Congress.
The Prelate then announced that in response to the request by the
Executive Council, His Holiness would be commending Pontifical Visit
sponsors and Prelacy donors throughout the evening. The Prelate reminded
the guests that His Holiness had, during previous events, awarded medals to
Mr. and Mrs. Sarkis Sepetjian, Mr. and Mrs. Osko Karaghossian, singer Harout
Pamboukjian, editor Mr. Nazaret Berberian, sponsor Mr. Harout Ohanessian,
and Mr. Guiragos Titizian (posthumously).
During the Pontifical Banquet, Mr. Harry Nadjarian, Mr. Khajag
Dikijian, and Professor Harut Barsamian were awarded the "Prince of Cilicia"
medal, while Mr. Vahan Bezdikian, Deacon Mark Shirin, Mrs. Silva
Tchakmakjian, and Ms. Rosette Haratoonian were awarded the "Knight of
Cilicia" medal. His Holiness presented mementos to Mr. Harout Jabarian and
Mr. Charlie Ghailian in commendation for their dedication and support.

Prior to inviting His Holiness to deliver his message, the Prelate
reflected on one of the main themes of the Pontifical Visit, which is the
continued progress of our schools. His Eminence announced that His Holiness
had responded favorably to a request by Prelacy Councils member to allocate
a large part of donations to schools, a decision he regarded as a strong
testament to the devotion of His Holiness to the Armenian School, language,
and heritage. The Prelate then presented His Holiness with a gift on behalf
of the Prelacy as a token of gratitude. The gift was an exquisite diamond
studded ring which bore the emblem of the Catholicosate of Cilicia and the
two-headed eagle. It was a beautiful work of art and a donation by the
owner of "Tacori", Mr. Haig Tacorian.
His Holiness greeted the guests and expressed appreciation for the
dinner, which he said is not just a dinner but a demonstration of a
commitment to safeguarding our future. His Holiness spoke with acclaim of
the service and devotion of the Prelate, and commended the Prelacy Councils
members for their input and contributions.
In commendation for the Prelate's decades-long service, His Holiness
presented him with a Panagia (Banageh).
Continuing his message, His Holiness stated that a people are
sustained by its ideals, and without ideals a community loses it meaning and
purpose. The spiritual, the cultural, a value system is what form the heart
and soul of a people, and for centuries it has been our churches and our
schools that have defended and promoted our values and they must remain the
central elements of our collective lives. His Holiness affirmed that for
the Armenian people as a whole, empowerment of Armenia, support of Karabakh,
and furthering of the Armenian Cause are imperatives, as we will never
forget our one and a half million martyrs and our lost lands. The Pontiff
stated that we must not be content with just commemoration and recognition;
that we must demand justice be served our rights fulfilled. We will remain
faithful to the legacy of our martyrs. Reflecting on the first ten days of
the Pontifical Visit, His Holiness commendably noted that he had witnessed
renewal and a strengthened sense of national identity. He highlighted the
importance of renewal in the Church and by the Church, stressing that
clergyman from Antelias delve into their service with this approach in mind
and with the ideal of the Holy See as a Faith Mission. On the topic of the
Armenian Cause, His Holiness stated that our just cause is the cause of our
Church, it is the cause of attaining our human rights and justice, and
stressed that our people will continue to demand from Turkey what is
rightfully ours until we reach our ultimate goals. In conclusion, His
Holiness affirmed that Armenians around the world, whether in Armenia,
Artsakh, or the Diaspora, are united in this common cause, that we as a
people are not resigned but rather have a great deal more to contribute to
our homeland and our history.
Throughout the evening, guests were entertained with musical
interludes by Hovig Meghrigian on the violin, and singer Hovhannes
Papakhanian who performed songs by Sayat Nova. Guests also enjoyed a slide
show presentation on our Prelacy Schools, and on the mission of the
Catholicosate and the Seminary.
The evening came to a close with the benediction by His Holiness,
and the Cilician and Pontifical anthems.
HIS HOLINESS AWARDS MEDALS TO
PONTIFICAL VISIT SPONSORS AND PRELACY DONORS
During the Pontifical Banquet on October 16, 2011, His Holiness
Catholicos Aram I awarded "Prince of Cilicia" and "Knight of Cilicia" medals
to Prelacy sponsors and supporters for their contributions to the
Catholicosate, Prelacy, and community.
His Holiness awarded the following individuals:
Mr. Harry Nadjarian, "Prince of Cilicia": In addition to his
benevolence to community organizations, Mr. Nadjarian most recently donated
$250,000 as the main sponsor of the Pontifical Visit. He has lent his
support to the Armenian Evangelical Union and the Armenian National
Committee.
Mr. Khajag Dikijian, "Prince of Cilicia" Has devotedly served for
the community for decades. Mr. Dikijian has been a member and Chair of the
Prelacy Executive Council, has brought his service to Prelacy Schools, and
is currently a member of the Catholicosate Central Executive.
Professor Harut Barsamian, "Prince of Cilicia": Prof. Barsamian is a
sponsor of the Prelacy and the Orange County Armenian Center, the latter of
which bears his name. Most recently, he generously donated 500 shares of
Apple stock to the Prelacy in honor of the Pontifical Visit. He has also
established a scholarship fund at the Prelacy, and proceeds from his book
"Resurrection with Shoe and Cane" are allocated to the scholarship.
Mr. Vahan Bezdikian, "Knight of Cilicia": Mr. Bezdikian is a member
of the Prelacy Executive Council, supervised and oversaw the building of the
Prelacy headquarters and continues to serve in that regard as the Chair of
the Building Committee, and has been a long-time sponsor of the Prelacy and
community organizations.
Deacon Mark Shirin, "Knight of Cilicia": Mr. Shirin is a Seminary
alumnus, a delegate at the Representatives Assembly, devoted servant of Holy
Trinity Church of Fresno, and has represented the Prelacy at the
Catholicosate General Assembly. Mr. Shirin and his wife Margaret were the
main sponsors of the Pontifical Banquet.
Mrs. Silva Tchakmakjian, "Knight of Cilicia": A "silent sponsor",
Mrs. Tchakmakjian has been quietly lending her generous support to the
Prelacy, Armenian organizations, and especially Armenia, through her "Garni"
foundation. Most recently, she donated $100,000 on the occasion of the
Pontifical Visit.
Ms. Rosette Haratoonian, "Knight of Cilicia": Ms. Haratoonian is a
Prelacy sponsor who generously donated to the Prelacy an apartment building
she came to own through her hard work.
During various Pontifical Visit events, His Holiness commended other
community sponsors as well, awarding medals to Mr. and Mrs. Sarkis
Sepetjian, Mr. and Mrs. Osko Karaghossian, singer Harout Pamboukjian, editor
Mr. Nazaret Berberian, sponsor Mr. Harout Ohanessian, and Mr. Guiragos
Titizian (posthumously).
HIS HOLINESS CATHOLICOS ARAM I BLESSES THE FOUNDATION OF ST. GARABED CHURCH
OF LAS VEGAS
On Wednesday, October 19, 2011, His Holiness Catholicos Aram I,
accompanied by H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, Clergy and
Councils members, arrived in Las Vegas where over the next two days the
Pontiff met with community members and blessed the foundation of St. Garabed
Church.
Upon their arrival, His Holiness an entourage were welcomed by
Parish Pastor Archpriest Fr. Avedis Torossian, Parish Council members, and
Las Vegas Pontifical Visit main sponsors Mr. and Mr. Alex and Arda
Yemenidjian, who also hosted His Holiness to a dinner that evening. During
the dinner, His Holiness spoke with high regards of the Yemenidjian family,
and of the dedicated service of Mrs. Yemenidjian's mother Verjine Koujakian
who was one of the founders of the Las Vegas Church Sunday School.
On the afternoon of Thursday, October 20, His Holiness was hosted to
lunch by the Parish Council, with the participation of representatives from
the ARF "Ishkhan" Gomideh and sister organizations.
Late afternoon, His Holiness and entourage arrived at the St.
Garabed Church and Community Center complex, where over 300 community
members were gathered, enthusiastically awaiting the arrival of the Pontiff
for the groundbreaking and blessing of the Church foundation. Church
benefactor Mr. Larry Barnes participated in the service, as did Clark County
Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani. Representatives from the offices of
Governor Brian Sandoval, Senator Harry Reid, Senator Dean Heller,
Congresswoman Shelley Berkley, and Congressman Dr. Joe Heck were also
present.
With the "Hrashapar" hymn, His Holiness entered the complex and
conducted the traditional blessing of salt and bread, after which ARS
Saturday School students presented a cultural program.
Thus began the blessing of the foundation ceremony.
His Holiness consecrated the Church dome and altar crosses, and the
Prelate consecrated the 16 pillars, which represent the 12 apostles, the
four Gospel writers, and St. Gregory the Illuminator, the foundations of our
Church.
Following the groundbreaking and blessing, His Holiness
congratulated the Parish community on their great achievement, conveyed the
importance of working together with faith, hope, and love, and expressed his
wish that the project reach its successful completion in the near future.
Speaking on what it means to build a church, His Holiness stated that our
church belongs to our people, the people are our church, and St. Garabed
Church of Las Vegas will also be the people's church and will serve all
indiscriminately.
The Prelate expressed gratitude to His Holiness for his Pontifical
visit to the Las Vegas community and pledged that all will work towards of
their mission with unwavering faith, hope, and love.
"Achahampouyr" followed, during which faithful received the
blessings of the Pontiff, after which His Holiness toured the complex,
expressing his contentment at the project and commending the service of the
Parish Priest, Parish Council, Ladies Auxiliary, and all volunteers.
The Parish community set in motion their dream of having their own
church nearly two years ago, when by the generosity of benefactor Larry
Barnes, the current site was purchased. The benefaction of Mr. Barnes was
in memory of his wife Seda Der Garabedian-Barnes, and her ancestors who had
perished in the Genocide. The remodeling phase began soon after, with first
the completion of the hall, where services are currently held. The second
phase is the construction of the Church, which will now proceed with the
blessings of His Holiness. Once the project is completed, the complex will
serve as the spiritual and cultural hub of the Las Vegas Armenian community.
In the evening, a banquet was held in honor of His Holiness at the
Tropicana Hotel, hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Alex and Arda Yemenidjian. Over 350
guests from different states had gathered to honor His Holienss.
Mr. Yemenidjian welcomed His Holiness, expressing his thanks for
what he called a historic day.
Parish Council Chair Mr. Adroushan Armenian expressed thanks and
gratitude to His Holiness for blessing the Las Vegas community with his
Pontifical visit. He then spoke of the history of St. Garabed Church and
the stages that have led them to where they are today. Addressing
benefactor Mr. Larry Barnes, Mr. Armenian said, "The Las Vegas Armenian
community and all Armenians around the world are grateful for your generous
donations that motivated us to undertake this important project."
On behalf of the Executive Council, Mr. Vahan Bezdikian welcomed His
Holiness and expressed gratitude for the day. He noted how the Las Vegas
Armenian community has a decades-long history but it was just in the last
few years that they experienced a revival, which is evidenced by the Church
project currently underway. He commended the Parish Council and affiliated
bodies for their dedication, and thanked the Yemenidjian family for hosting
the visit.
The banquet included a cultural program of dances and recitations.
The Prelate expressed his appreciation and commended Mr. and Mr.
Yemenidjian for their commitment and service to our Church, and on behalf of
His Holiness presented them with a memento. The Prelate also commended the
Parish Priest and Council, and presented a hand cross to the Church.
The Prelate joyfully welcomed the presence of faithful from Los
Angeles, Arizona, New Jersey, and Chicago. He reminded the guests that the
theme of the Pontifical Visit is "With faith we build", and stressed that
with faith we will have spiritual renewal, with faith we will serve for the
continued progress of our schools, and with faith we will continue to fight
for the Armenian Cause. He then invited His Holiness to deliver his
message.
His Holiness once again greeted the Parish community and all those
who had journeyed to be a part of the historic day. He affirmed that the
establishment and livelihood of a community depends on collective efforts,
which is what leads to successful realization of endeavors. The Pontiff
urged all to serve for the collective good with unwavering faith and strong
determination, and concluded by once again commending the hosts, Executive
Council, sponsors and supporters.
ECUMENICAL PRAYER SERVICE LED BY
HIS HOLINESS CATHOLICOS ARAM I
On Wednesday, October 19, 2011, His Holiness Catholicos Aram I led
an ecumenical prayer service, with the participation of spiritual leaders
and clergy from the Armenian Apostolic, Catholic, and Evangelical Churches,
Coptic, Syriac, and Antiochian Orthodox Churches, and the Roman Catholic
Church.
The prayer service was hosted by the Coptic Orthodox Diocese and
took place at St. Mary and St. Athanasius Church in Northridge.
Participating in the prayer service were H.E. Archbishop Moushegh
Mardirossian, Prelate, H.G. Bishop Serapion (Coptic Church), H.E. Archbishop
Mor Clemis Eugene Kaplan (Syriac Church), Bishop Joseph Zehlaoui (Antiochian
Church), Rt. Rev. Alexei Smith (Roman Catholic Church), Very Rev. Fr. Krikor
Chahinian (Armenian Catholic Church), and Rev. Joe Matossian (Armenian
Evangelical Union), and clergy members from each of the Churches. The
Prelate was accompanied by H.E. Archbishop Yeprem Tabakian and clergy
members.
With the singing of the "Hrashapar" hymn, His Holiness entered the
Church accompanied by the clergy. Prayers were then offered by the leaders
or clergy of each Church in their respective languages, followed by readings
from the Bible.
Remarks were delivered by Bishop Serapion, Archbishop Kaplan, and
Bishop Zehlaoui, all of whom reflected on the current situation in the
Middle East and specifically on the recent clashes in Egypt, and expressed
their hope for peace to prevail in the region. Bishop Serapion conveyed the
greetings and well wishes of H.H. Pope Shenouda III to His Holiness.
The Prelate spoke of the purpose and significance of the ecumenical
gathering, and invited His Holiness to deliver his message.
After greeting the clergy, His Holiness commended Bishop Serapion,
who he has known for many years, speaking highly of his service in
ecumenical affairs from the Middle East to the United States, and expressed
his thanks to the Bishop for hosting the gathering.
His Holiness noted that Christian Churches were established on the
basis of peace, that peace forms the heart of our Churches and the
foundation of our mission. Christians are disciples of peace and must
remain so, and with their faith, knowledge, and hope, must preserve their
identity in the Middle East as they have deep roots in the region and form a
part of the region's rich and ancient culture. Being a disciple of peace
does not mean being stagnant, it means protecting one's rights, assuming
responsibility of obligations, and contributing to the development of
democracy. His Holiness concluded by calling for strengthening of
ecumenical collaboration.
An exchange of mementos followed, after which His Holiness and
clergy were hosted to lunch by the Coptic Church.
A CULTURAL EVENING IN HONOR OF HIS HOLINESS
HOSTED BY THE ARMENIAN SOCIETY OF LOS ANGELES
On the evening of Tuesday, October 18, 2011, a reception was held in
honor of His Holiness Catholicos Aram I at the headquarters of the Armenian
Society of Los Angeles. The hall was filled with over five hundred guests
who had come to honor His Holiness.
Upon his arrival at the center, His Holiness, accompanied by H.E.
Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, was welcomed by the Board and
members of the organization. At the entrance, His Holiness conducted the
traditional blessing of salt and bread, followed by the Blessing of the Home
service.
The program began with the national anthems of the U.S. and Armenia
by singer Anahit Nercisyan.
Welcoming remarks were delivered by Board of Directors Chair Mr.
Njdeh Pirjanian who spoke of the visit of His Holiness as a historic event.
He noted how sixteen years earlier His Holiness had visited the previous
center of the organization where he had wished them success in their
service. He stated that the organization members had committed to that
pledge and today, in their new center, they continue their service to the
youth and community. It was apparent that preserving the Armenian culture
is a major focus of the organization's mission, as the evening was filled
with a beautiful program of songs and recitations.
The organization's choir, led by Mikayel Avedissian, presented a
number of songs, a young member of the organization Eric Atamian beautifully
recited Barouyr Sevag's "We are few, but we are Armenian", and Saturday
School students performed a number of traditional songs led by Hermine
Toumanian. Master of Ceremonies Tina Tamlakian also participated in the
cultural program with recitations. All of the performances were met with
great applause by the audience.
Following the cultural program, remarks were delivered by Board of
Trustees Chair Dr. Vaughn Gregor welcomed the guests, and expressed thanks
to His Holiness and the Prelate for facilitating and accepting their request
to honor the Pontiff at their center. He referred to His Holiness as a
source of inspiration, and lauded his leadership in ecumenical affairs and
as an advocate of the Armenian Cause and rights in the international arena.
He conveyed his well wishes to His Holiness, and invited the Prelate for his
remarks.
The Prelate commended the noble mission of the Armenian Society of
Los Angeles and their work in establishing this home for the community, a
place that fosters the virtues of love and harmonious collaboration. He
thanked for organizing and hosting the evening and the beautifully prepared
program, and invited His Holiness for his message.
His Holiness greeted the guests and blessed the new center, stating
that it not merely a physical structure, rather a living center with spirit
where ethical and cultural values are preserved and fostered which serves
the people, just as the Armenian Church does. He spoke of the Iran-Armenian
population as people who preserve and instill the Armenian culture, are
faithful to the Armenian language, and are propagators of our national
values and heritage. His Holiness stated that he has visited the three
Dioceses of Iran numerous times and noted that they are the embodiment of
our history, culture, and church. He also stated that the program they had
prepared is a testament to the fact that although we are physically far from
Armenia, we are rooted in the Armenian spirit.
Speaking on the multi-faceted mission of the Catholicosate of
Cilicia, His Holiness specifically its role in the Diaspora. His Holiness
noted that for decades, Armenian Diaspora communities kept alive the spirit
of a free and independent Armenia and its symbol, our tri-color flag, and
now, it is the responsibility of all to safeguard the freedom and
independence of Armenia, to support Artsakh, to maintain the Armenian-ness
of our institutions. Furthermore, we have a responsibility to carry out the
will of our martyrs. In three years, we will be commemorating the
centennial of the Armenian Genocide; alongside honoring the memory of our
martyrs, we must bring our cause to the attention of the world and demand
our rights because "a free and independent Armenian must also be a united
Armenia...we will rally for a Greater Armenia", stressed His Holiness, who
also reflected on the importance of unity in this regard with the combined
spirit of Armenia, Karabakh, and the Diaspora. In conclusion, His Holiness
called for the renewal of our pledges as we continue our path to securing
our rights and strengthening our homeland.
As the program was drawing to a close, the Prelate announced that
His Holiness had brought a memento from Antelias, a reproduction of one
of the pages of the ancient "Partser Pert" Gospel, which he presented to
them.
With the singing of the Pontifical anthem, His Holiness was led out
of the hall and toured the various departments of the center. A reception
in his honor followed.
HIS HOLINESS MEETS WITH ARMENIAN PROFESSIONALS
AT A LUNCHEON HELD AT THE PRELACY
On Tuesday, October 18, 2011, a luncheon was held at the Prelacy
during which His Holiness Catholicos Aram I met with Armenian professionals
of various fields. The luncheon was organized by the Pontifical Visit
Public Relations Committee and was significant in that it related to the
program recently initiated by the Catholicosate of Cilicia aimed at
gathering information about our manpower in the Diaspora.
His Holiness, accompanied by H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian,
Prelate, and Councils members, was led to the "Dikran and Zarouhie Der
Ghazarian" Hall where over a hundred Armenian professionals welcomed the
Pontiff.
The lunch meeting provided attendees with a unique opportunity to
discuss with His Holiness challenges and opportunities affecting our
community and to hear his paternal guidance and message. Attendees were
given forms to fill out, which will be submitted to the Catholicosate to
assist in their program of gathering data.
Master of Ceremonies Mrs. Pattyl Aposhian-Kasparian welcomed the
guests, and thanked His Holiness for the opportunity to hold this important
luncheon, which she said is about acknowledging the individuals who take on
another level of responsibility and burden. "Every attendee here volunteers
their talent, skills and knowledge for the betterment of the Armenian
community. Armenians are achieving professional milestones in larger
numbers in every professional arena. We all have potential power inside us
and it is the request of His Holiness to identify our talents, strengths and
skills to serve the better good of all Armenians." She concluded by
stating, "Your Holiness, allow our presence today representing 12 active
professional organizations to signal our support to your initiative."
An opportunity was given for a representative from each organization
to share information with the guests to more closely familiarize them with
the endeavors and mission of their specific organization.
The Prelate commended all the organizations present for the work
they carry out and for their service to the Armenian community. He then
invited His Holiness to deliver his message.
His Holiness expressed joy and pride at the growing number of
Armenian professionals. He noted that we must not be satisfied with the
status quo, rather individuals and organizations must strive to do more as
the work that needs to be done is unending. His Holiness also stated that
professionals must consider service as a part of their mission and they, in
conjunction with the Church, must reach out to members of society and assist
in the betterment of their communities.
A question and answer session followed on topics including
confiscated Churches in Western Armenia and the growing number of religious
factions in Armenia and the Diaspora. In conclusion, His Holiness stated
that manpower is much more crucial then financial capacity, as manpower is
God given while the financial is man-built.
The event concluded with the benediction by His Holiness.
HIS HOLINESS CATHOLICOS ARAM I VISITS MESROBIAN SCHOOL
On Tuesday, October 18, 2011, His Holiness visited Mesrobian School
in Montebello where the Principals, teachers, and students of both Mesrobian
and Ari Guiragos Minassian School of Orange County had gathered to welcome
him. Also participating in the visit were Clergy and Councils members, Holy
Cross Cathedral Board of Trustees, and representatives of local sister
organizations.
Upon his arrival, His Holiness, who was accompanied by H.E.
Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, was greeted by Mesrobian School
Principal Mr. Seto Boyajian, AG Minassian School Principal Mrs. Kohar Zaher,
and students who had gathered in the courtyard.
The program took place in the courtyard, and began with the singing
of the Lord's Prayer. Welcoming remarks were delivered by both Principals,
and representatives from Holy Cross Cathedral Board of Trustees and
Mesrobian School Parent Support Committee. Two students also spoke,
thanking His Holiness for dedicating this year to the Armenian Child.
A cultural program of songs and recitation by students from both
schools followed.
In his message, His Holiness spoke of the role of today's children
in our future and the irreplaceable role of the Armenian Church and School
in the lives of all our people but especially the youth with regards to
religious and national instruction. Our lives are a daily struggle, said
His Holiness, and our schools are at the forefront, noting that it is our
church and schools that built the Armenian community in the Diaspora for the
benefit of our people. In conclusion, His Holiness commended all the
parents who have entrusted their children to the care of the Armenian
School.
An exchange of mementos between His Holiness and the Principal
followed, and the program came to a lose with the benediction and the
singing of the Cilician anthem. The administration then hosted His Holiness
to a reception.
During the visit, His Holiness also visited classrooms and had an
opportunity to address the students.
MAYOR ANTONIO VILLARAIGOSA HOSTS A DINNER AT
GETTY HOUSE IN HONOR OF HIS HOLINESS CATHOLICOS ARAM I
On the evening of Monday, October 17, 2011, Los Angeles Mayor the
Honorable Antonio Villaraigosa hosted a dinner for His Holiness Catholicos
Aram I at his official residence, the Getty House.
His Holiness was accompanied by H.E. Archbishop Moushegh
Mardirossian, Prelate, and staff bearer Very Rev. Fr. Mesrob Sarkissian.
Among the invited guests were leaders of the Christian, Muslim, and Jewish
faiths, including H.E. Archbishop Mor Clemis Eugene Kaplan (Syriac Orthodox
Church), Pastor William Monroe Campbell (Mr. Gilead Missionary Baptist
Church), Rabbi Mark Diamond (Board of Rabbis), Imam Jihad Turk (Religious
Director, Islamic Center of Southern California), Pastor Jim Tolle (Church
on the Way), Very Rev. Fr. John Bakas (Dean, St. Sophia Cathedral), Rt. Rev.
Mary Glasspool (Episcopal Diocese), and Fr. Antony Attallah (Coptic Orthodox
Diocese). Guests from the Prelacy included Central Executive Council
members Khajag Dikijian and Vahe Yacoubian, Executive Council member Vahrij
Pilavjian, ARF CC Chair Avedik Izmirlian, Mourad Topalian, Varant Melkonian,
and Harry Nadjarian.
Mayor Villaraigosa first had a private meeting with His Holiness and
the Prelate, after which they joined the guests for dinner.
The Mayor welcomed His Holiness, announcing that it was the first
time he was hosting a spiritual leader at his residence.
With leaders from the various faiths gathered around one table, the
evening included interesting dialogue on ecumenical and inter-faith
relations. It was stressed that although there are differences among the
faiths, there must always be mutual respect. Given his vast experience in
the ecumenical arena, His Holiness answered questions addressed to him by
the guests.
In his remarks, the Mayor spoke highly of His Holiness and also on
the contributions of the Armenian community in Los Angeles.
The evening concluded with an exchange of mementos.
HIS HOLINESS CATHOLICOS ARAM I VISITS ARARAT HOME
On Monday, October 17, 2011, His Holiness Catholicos Aram I visited
Ararat Home in Mission Hills where he blessed the administration and
blessed, conducted a prayer service at the Chapel, and visited the Museum.
His Holiness, accompanied by H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian,
Prelate, Clergy and Councils members, first visited the skilled-nursing
facility where he led a prayer service and blessed the patients. Next they
headed to the assisted-living facility where His Holiness led the Blessing
of the Home prayer service and blessed the patients. The Pontiff reflected
on the words Ararat Home, saying it had special meaning for Armenians.
Ararat is the symbol of Armenians, Ararat is the symbol of our identity, of
our unity, stated His Holiness, and said the word "home" also symbolizes
family. "Home brings together the same values, the same traditions. This
is not an old people's home. In this house, the spiritual and medical come
together, and I'm very much touched by this home". His Holiness presented
the residents with gifts of crosses, then headed to the Sheen Memorial
Chapel for a prayer service, after which he toured the Eskijian Museum.
His Holiness and entourage were then hosted to a luncheon by the
administration. Welcoming remarks were delivered by Ararat Home Board Chair
Mr. Nazar Ashjian, member Mr. Joseph Kanimian, and Central Executive member
Mr. Vahe Yacoubian.
The Prelate commended the administration for their devoted service,
and noted that the Prelacy and Ararat Home have had a close relationship for
many years and that Prelacy Clergy members visit the home on a monthly basis
to celebrate Divine Liturgy and offer prayers. He then invited His Holiness
to deliver his message.
His Holiness commended the administration for their care and
nurturing of the elderly and reflecting on the name of the home, said that
just as Ararat mountain belongs to all Armenians, this home too, which bears
its name, serves all Armenians. His Holiness once again commended the Board
and all the sponsors who support the valuable mission of Ararat Home, and
expressed his wish that this institution be an ideal example to all
community organizations.
HIS HOLINESS CATHOLICOS ARAM I VISITS FERRAHIAN SCHOOL
On the morning of Monday, October 17, 2011, His Holiness Catholicos
Aram I arrived at Ferrahian School where he was met with great applause by
students waving Armenian flags who had gathered in the courtyard to welcome
the Pontiff to their school.
His Holiness, accompanied by the H.E. Archbishop Moushegh
Mardirossian, Prelate, was welcomed to the school by Principal John
Kossakian, Board of Regents members Mr. Mark Gedikian, school board members
and parents. In attendance were Clergy, Central Executive and Executive
Council members, and representatives of local sister organizations.
After the traditional blessing of salt and bread, His Holiness
proceeded to "Avedissian" Hall for a cultural program which consisted of
recitations, songs, and dance by the students.
Master of Ceremonies Mrs. Azadouhi Ghazarian welcomed the guests and
stated that the day was a historic one as the students granted the
opportunity to see His Holiness in person for the first time.
Principal Kossakian welcomed His Holiness to the first Armenian
School in America, and affirmed that Ferrahian High, Marie Cabayan
Elementary, and Ashkhen Pilavjian Pre-Schools would remain beacons of
Armenian education. Addressing the students, the Principal brought to their
attention that aside from being the spiritual leader, His Holiness is also a
champion of the Armenian Cause and a staunch defender of the rights of the
Armenian people. In conclusion, the Principal announced that he had a
surprise for His Holiness, a hand-written museum quality document from 1826
which had Armenian drawings and the "I confess with faith" prayer written on
it. It had been donated to the school some time ago but the Principal
announced that the most appropriate home for it is the Museum of the
Catholicosate of Cilicia. Students read seven verses from the prayer, then
presented the document to His Holiness. The Prelate was then invited to
deliver his remarks.
The Prelate noted that at that moment, His Holiness was at a place
that was very dear to his heart, the Armenian School surrounded by Armenian
students and teachers, and invited His Holiness to deliver his message.
His Holiness first noted that he was impressed by how quietly and
interestedly the students were following the program, saying that it was yet
another positive quality of the Armenian School, a place where character and
Armenian identity built. His Holiness commended the teachers, calling them
"second parents" who have just as important a role as parents do.
Addressing the students, His Holiness urged them to learn Armenian, speak
Armenian, and preserve our language and culture for in a few years they will
be the leaders of our community. In conclusion, His Holiness commended the
Principal, faculty, and all affiliated bodies who help the school fulfill
its mission, and prayed for the Lord to bless the students and grant success
to the school.
The program came to a close with the benediction by His Holiness,
after which a reception was held in the faculty room in honor of the
Pontiff.
PONTIFICAL DIVINE LITURGY AT ST. MARY'S CHURCH
On the morning of Sunday, October 16, 2011, thousands of faithful of
all ages had gathered at St. Mary's Church in Glendale for the Pontifical
Divine Liturgy celebrated by His Holiness Catholicos Aram I, to receive the
Pontiff's blessings and hear his inspiring message.
His Holiness, accompanied by H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian,
Prelate, arrived at St. Mary's Church where Homenetmen scouts had lined up
in his honor along the path leading to the Church doors. Present to greet
His Holiness were Clergy and Councils members, H.E. Archbishop Mor Clemis
Eugene Kaplan, Prelate of the Syriac Orthodox Church, H.E. Archbishop Yeprem
Tabakian, H.E. Archbishop Vatche Hovsepian, and representatives of sister
organizations.
His Holiness and entourage were led to the Church doors were white
doves were released as Sunday School students sand the Pontifical anthem.
With the singing of the "Hrashapar" hymn, His Holiness entered the
Church and proceeded to the altar to begin the Divine Liturgy. The Prelate
and Archbishop Tabakian assisted at the altar.
Before the Pontifical message, the Prelate greeted the faithful and
thanked the Lord for granting the Prelacy this fourth Pontifical Visit of
His Holiness. He reflected on the past ten days of the Pontifical Visit
which has renewed us spiritually and given impetus to our schools and cause.
He then invited His Holiness to deliver his message.
His Holiness conveyed his paternal blessings to all the faithful
present and especially to the Prelate who is fully devoted in his service to
our church and people, and to the Executive Council and members of sister
organizations for their service towards the advancement of our community.
Citing from the day's Scripture reading, which was the Apostle
Luke's account of our Lord Jesus Christ visiting His hometown of Nazareth,
His Holiness noted a passage from the Old Testament which Jesus had read
during His visit, "The spirit of the Lord is upon Me because He anointed Me
to preach the Gospel to the poor, He has sent Me to proclaim release to the
captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are
downtrodden. To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord". Jesus Christ was
sent because mankind and the world had separated themselves from God, man
had lost his God-given virtues. Jesus Christ is the truth and the path to
redemption, and these principles are upheld by our Church.
Speaking on our Church history and the role of the Armenian Church,
His Holiness noted that Jesus Christ revealed Himself to Armenia through
Etchmiadzin, established our Church, and centuries on remains engrained in
the lives of the Armenian people. Our Church became that which built and
preserved our faith, culture, and identity. The Church has had an
invaluable role throughout our history, from Khrimian Hayrig to Sardarabad
to Kharabakh to an independent Armenia and the voice of our Church today
echoes loudly from Armenia to Kharabakh to the Diaspora, breathing life into
all. His Holiness urged the faithful to be active participants in teh life
of our Church, to become children of our Church, and to follow the righteous
path of Jesus Christ which leads to salvation.
The Cilician and Pontifical anthems were sung at the conclusion of
the Liturgy, and His Holiness was then led from the altar with the singing
of the "Oorakh Ler" hymn.
PRELACY SCHOOLS BANQUET IN HONOR OF
HIS HOLINESS CATHOLICOS ARAM I
- OSKO KARAGHOSSIAN AWARDED THE "PRINCE OF CILICIA" MEDAL
On the evening of Saturday, October 15, 2011, nearly five hundred
community members gathered at "Avedissian" Hall for a banquet in honor of
His Holiness Catholicos Aram I. The banquet was organized by the Board of
Regents, in conjunction with Prelacy Schools. The evening's hosts were Mr.
and Mrs. Osko and Yeran Karaghossian.
His Holiness, accompanied by H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian,
Prelate, arrived at the hall where he was greeted with a standing ovation
and great applause from the guests. In attendance were Clergy and Council
members, Board of Regents members, Principals, Directors, and faculty of
Prelacy Schools, parents, and members of sister organizations.
Welcoming remarks were delivered by Board of Regents Chair Mr. Mark
Gedikian, and Principal John Kossakian, who was also the Master of
Ceremonies. Mr. Kossakian reflected on the three themes of the Pontifical
Visit, which are spiritual renewal, reinvigorating Schools and the Armenian
Cause, and the invaluable role His Holiness has had and continues to have in
all three arenas. He lauded His Holiness as "a great educator, an educator
of educators" and invited the Prelate for his remarks.
The Prelate commended Armenian educators and all those who lend
their moral and financial support to the unique mission of Armenian schools
and Armenian teachers. He spoke highly of the unwavering and generous
support of the evening's host, the Karaghossian family, who have contributed
significantly to our community, and announced that in recognition of their
benevolence, His Holiness would be awarding them the "Prince of Cilicia"
medal.
After awarding them the "Prince of Cilicia" medal, His Holiness
commended the Karaghossian family for their support of Armenian Schools.
Speaking on the role of Armenian Schools and teachers, His Holiness stated
that the Armenian School is the livelihood of our community and the
foundation of the school are the teachers who have the mighty responsibility
of instructing our youth on becoming good people and good Armenians. He
expressed concern on the need for more Armenian teachers, here and in
Lebanon as well, and for more Armenian students to attend Armenian Schools.
HIS HOLINESS ARAM I AND HIS BEATITUDE BECHARA RAI
MEET IN LOS ANGELES
On the morning of Saturday, October 15, 2011, His Holiness
Catholicos Aram I met with His Beatitude Bechara Rai, Patriarch of the
Lebanese Maronite Church.
His Holiness arrived at Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Church in Los
Angeles accompanied by H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, H.E.
Archbishop Yeprem Tabakian, and clergy. They were welcomed by Patriarch
Rai, Bishops of the Maronite Dioceses of Los Angeles and Brazil, and clergy
members.
The discussion centered on the current goings-on in Lebanon, the
situation of Christians in the Middle East, and the relationship between
Churches headquartered in the Middle East with their faithful in the
Diaspora. Both spiritual leaders emphasized the importance of unity between
Christian Churches and strengthened ties.
His Holiness gave His Beatitude a brief synopsis of the lecture he
had presented a day before at UCLA on the future of Christianity in the
Middle East. Patriarch Rai spoke of the meetings he has had during his
visit to the United States, which are generally related to Lebanon and the
Middle East.
After the hour long meeting, a prayer service was held inside the
Cathedral. A brief interview followed, during which both His Holiness and
His Beatitude spoke highly of the close relations between the Armenian and
Maronite communities and called for more collaboration.
RECEPTION IN HONOR OF HIS HOLINESS ORGANIZED BY ASBAREZ
- HIS HOLINESS AWARDS NAZARET BERBERIAN
"ST. MESROB MASHDOTS" MEDAL
On Friday, October 14, 2011, a reception in honor of Catholicos Aram
I was held during which His Holiness honored editor and scholar Nazareth
Berberian for his over forty years of service to the media and community.
The reception was hosted by Mr. Koko Topalian at his residence, and
with the participation of more than one hundred fifty guests. His Holiness
was accompanied by H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, Clergy,
and Central Executive and Executive Council members. Among those in
attendance were ARF Central Committee Chair Mr. Avedik Izmirlian and
members, Asbarez editor Mr. Apo Boghikian and colleagues, members of Mr.
Berberian's family, sponsors, and friends.
Upon his arrival, His Holiness conducted the traditional blessing of
salt and bread, then blessed the tables. Mr. Boghikian welcomed the guests,
inviting them to raise their glasses in honor of His Holiness. In his
welcoming remarks, Master of Ceremonies Raffi Hamparian reflected on the
leadership and guidance of His Holiness, and on the role of the Church in
our history and lives today.
A cultural program took place during dinner, after which the
official program began.
Mr. Boghikian expressed his appreciation to His Holiness for
accepting the request of Asbarez to host this reception in his honor. He
stated that the decision by His Holiness to honor Nazareth Berberian is a
demonstration of the love, respect, and dedication of His Holiness towards
those who serve the Armenian media, language, and culture. Mr. Boghikian
also thanked the guests in attendance for coming to honor His Holiness and
support our media.
Mr. Boghikian then announced that Mr. and Mrs. Osko and Yeran
Karaghossian were donating $25,000 to the ARF Central Committee in memory of
Yeran's brother Daron Avedissian, who was a member of the Catholicosate
Central Executive. He thanked the Karaghossian family for their generosity.
Mr. Boghikian them reflected on the career of Mr. Berberian, and
invited Mr. Sarkis Mahserejian, a close friend of Mr. Berberian, to
introduce him.
Through anecdotes and memories, Mr. Mahserejian spoke of the
different stages of Mr. Berberian's life that led him to where he is today.
He spoke highly of his service to the ARF and also that of Mr. Berberian's
wife Eva, who has also served ARF media outlets. Mr. Mahserejian extended
his best wishes to Mr. Berberian and invited Mr. Izmirlian to deliver his
remarks.
Mr. Izmirlian praised the dedication and service of Mr. Berberian
and presented him with a beautiful pen on this occasion.
The Prelate was then invited to deliver his message.
The Prelate reflected on the Pontifical Visit of His Holiness and
the activities and meetings of the past nine days. He expressed thanks and
commended Mr. Topalian for hosting the evening. The Prelate lauded the
career and service of Mr. Berberian and shared his own memories. He
expressed his appreciation to the Karaghossian family for their continued
generosity, and reminded the guests that in addition to the their donation
that evening, just over a week ago they donated $75,000 to the
Catholicosate, Prelacy, and Prelacy Schools, and were the hosts of the
banquet in honor of His Holiness which was held the following evening. The
Prelate then invited His Holiness for the award ceremony.
His Holiness stated that he first became acquainted with Mr.
Berberian in 1978, during the civil war in Lebanon, when the Pontiff was
called to serve as the Prelate of Lebanon. He remembered Mr. Berberian at
that time as a young devoted member of the ARF, and among the generation of
ARF members who breathed life into the community and served towards their
livelihood during those difficult days. He spoke of Mr. Berberian as first
and foremost a devotee of the ARF who sacrifices self to serve his larger
family, and second as a highly talented writer, editor, and journalist. In
commendation of his life's work, His Holiness awarded him the "St. Mesrob
Mashdots" medal, which was met with a standing ovation and great applause
and cheer from the guests. His Holiness stated that St. Mesrob must be
proud that an individual like Mr. Berberian who has preserved and fostered
his legacy is receiving a medal which carries his name. His Holiness also
commended Mrs. Eva Dervishian-Berberian for her service to the Armenian
media and to the Catholicosate. In conclusion, the Pontiff thanked Mr.
Topalian for hosting the evening and presented him with a memento.
Mr. Berberian expressed his thanks to all those who have influenced
and shaped him throughout his life. He echoed the words of the Master of
Ceremonies describing His Holiness as a moral compass, and expressed his
gratitude for the great honor. He concluded by thanking Mr. Boghikian and
Mr. Topalian for organizing and hosting the evening.

HIS HOLINESS CATHOLICOS ARAM I LECTURES AT UCLA ON
"THE FUTURE OF CHRISTIANITY IN THE MIDDLE EAST"
On Friday, October 14, 2011, a capacity crowd gathered at UCLA's
Broad Hall to hear a riveting lecture by His Holiness Catholicos Aram I on
"The Future of Christianity in the Middle East".
The Pontifical lecture was sponsored by the UCLA Center for Near
Eastern Studies, Center for the Study of Religion, Department of History,
Armenian Students' Association, and the International Institute.
His Holiness, accompanied by H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian,
Prelate, and staff bearer Very Rev. Fr. Mesrob Sarkissian, arrived on campus
at noon where they were welcomed by Vice-Provost of International Studies
Randal Johson, Professor of History Richard Hovannisian, Professor of Near
Eastern Languages and Cultures and Director of the Center for the Study of
Religion Jacco Dieleman, Past Chair of Academic Senate and Professor of
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Ann Karagozian, and Chair of the
Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures William Schniedewind.
The UCLA delegation escorted His Holiness and entourage to Bunche
Hall for a reception, during which His Holiness said "the university is at
the center of my ministry and I consider myself everlastingly a student, and
I encourage action with reflection." Vice-Provost Randal Johnson presented
a gift to His Holiness, after which he was escorted to Broad Hall for the
lecture.
The event began with the campus welcome by Randal Johnson, who
thanked His Holiness for making the time to visit the University and
expressed how honored he was that the Pontiff was there to share his
thoughts on such an important topic.
Professor Richard Hovannisian in his opening remarks welcomed His
Holiness back to UCLA after 11 years, when the Pontiff had presided over
what he said was the best conference in recent memory on the issue of
Armenian Cilicia. He continued to say that with all that is currently going
on in the Middle East, the brave and truthful speech of His Holiness is
needed now more than ever. He concluded by stating that "His Holiness has
been a leading and trusted voice in the Middle East with respect to both
Muslim and inter-Christian dialogues", and after going through the Pontiff's
biography, invited him to the podium to present his lecture.
Catholicos Aram I stated that regime change will have a positive
impact on the lives of Christians only when democratic states are
established and the rights of Christian communities are fully recognized and
respected. Otherwise, he continued, "Christians will continue to emigrate."
In the second part of his speech, His Holiness spoke about the
challenges faced by the churches in the region. He stated that they must
redefine their self-understanding and reassess their witness in this region
which is in turmoil and transition because the church is a God-given
vocation and not simply an institution.
After sharing his view on the way the churches in the Middle East
should respond, Catholicos Aram I concluded: "Christians in the West should
not consider the churches of the Middle East as the remnants of Christian
history or mission lands, but as genuine partners; they should assist them
to remain in the Middle East, in their own lands. Judaism, Christianity, and
Islam must assume their prophetic roles at this critical moment of history,
and endeavor together to build a culture of life which promotes reconciled
diversities and a quality of life sustained by dignity, freedom, justice and
peace, as well as by tolerance and mutual trust. Especially at this time,
when the region is oscillating between uncertainty and promise, fear and
hope, the three monotheistic religions are called to respond to this
challenge."

HIS HOLINESS CATHOLICOS ARAM I A HISTORIC EVENING
On the evening of Sunday, October 16, 2011, a record number 1250
sponsors and friends, along with a number of public officials and
dignitaries, gathered at the Universal Hilton for the Pontifical Banquet in
honor of His Holiness Catholicos Aram I.
With the singing of the "Hrashapar" hymn, His Holiness entered the
hall as guests were pleasantly surprised that the Pontiff was joined by His
Beatitude Bechara Rai, Patriarch of the Maronite Church, and Bishops. The
procession included H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, Clergy,
and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. The head table included Consul General of
Armenia Grigor Hovhannissian and his wife, acting Consul General of Lebanon
Madonna Aoun Ghazal and her husband, H.E. Archbishop Yeprem Tabakian, H.E.
Archbishop Vatche Hovsepian, Rev. Joe Matossian, Minister of the Armenian
Evangelical Union of N. America, Very Rev. Fr. Armenag Bedrossian,
representing Very Rev. Fr. Krikor Chahinian, Rector of the Armenian Catholic
Church, Central Executive member Mr. Khajag Dikijian, Executive Council
Chair Mrs. Rima Boghossian, and ARF Central Committee Chair Mr.Avedik
Izmirlian.
At the start of the evening, the Prelate announced with joy that His
Beatitude Patriarch Bechara Rai had reciprocated the visit of His Holiness a
day earlier, and invited him to deliver his remarks.
Speaking in Arabic, Patriarch Rai expressed thanks for the
opportunity to participate in the Pontifical Banquet , and after greeting
the Mayor and official guests, went on to speak about the close relation
between Antelias and the Maronite Patriarchate at Bkerke. He spoke with
pride at the strong bond Lebanese citizens in the Diaspora feel with their
homeland, Lebanon, noting that Armenians are among that group. Speaking of
the virtues of the Armenian people, His Beatitude stated that after
martyrdom the Armenian people rose again, and that makes them great people.
Patriarch Rai commended all those who stand behind and lend their support to
the progress of Lebanon and the Middle East, and in conclusion emphasized
how crucial the presence of Christians in the Middle East is and how
important it is to spread the light of the Bible and the work of the Church
in the region.
Responding in French, His Holiness welcomed His Beatitude,
considered his presence an expression of respect towards the Armenian people
and the Armenian Church, and stated that collaboration between the Armenian
and Lebanese people is not limited to Lebanon, rather it can be found across
the globe. His Holiness noted that the Armenian and Maronite Churches both
share in the responsibility of maintaining Christianity in the Middle East
as well as encouraging Muslim-Christian dialogue. In conclusion, His
Holiness reaffirmed the dedication of the Armenian people to ensuring the
freedom and independence of Lebanon, and wished that the shared mission of
His Beatitude and himself are successfully realized.
The official program began with the singing of national anthems.
Mrs. Vartoug Avedikian sang the Lebanese national anthem, accompanied by
Mrs. Hourig Abdulian on the piano, and Ms. Lara Gharibian performed the
American and Armenian anthems.
Following the blessing of tables by His Holiness, Deacon Mark
Shirin, who was the Pontifical Banquet sponsor and Master of Ceremonies,
welcomed the guests and acknowledged the public officials present, including
Congressman Adam Schiff, State Senator Kevin De Leon, Assembly member
Anthony Portantino, Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich, Los
Angeles City Council President Eric Garcetti and member Paul Krekorian,
Glendale City Council member Ara Najarian, Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogart and
City Council members, and Judge Armand Arabian.
Central Executive member Mr. Khajag Dikijian was then invited to
deliver his remarks. Mr. Dikijian, who is also the Chair of the Pontifical
Visit Steering Committee, brought to the attention of the guests the
extraordinary profile of His Holiness as a church leader, author, and
intermediary in inter-church and inter-faith relations, and welcomed the
guests to rise and raise a glass in honor of His Holiness.
Executive Council Chair Mrs. Rima Boghossian remarked that the
Prelacy is honored to be graced with the Pontifical Visit of His Holiness
and for shepherd and flock to be in direct communication, and affirmed that
our community will heed the guidance and suggestions of His Holiness to
overcome any concerns we may face.
Mayor Villaraigosa was then invited to share his thoughts. The
Mayor lauded the role of His Holiness on the international level, noting how
the Pontiff headed the World Council of Churches as Chairmen for two terms.
On behalf of the United States of America, a nation of religious freedom, he
welcomed His Holiness as a faith leader. Speaking of the Armenian people,
the Mayor noted that after the dark days of the Genocide, the Armenian
people spread to all parts of the world and with their faith they
reestablished themselves and today, the Armenians of Los Angeles contribute
greatly to the community and to society.
Following the Mayor's remarks, His Holiness was presented with a
certificate of welcome by Supervisor Mike Antonovich, and Congressman Adam
Schiff welcomed the Pontiff on behalf of his colleagues in Congress.
The Prelate then announced that in response to the request by the
Executive Council, His Holiness would be commending Pontifical Visit
sponsors and Prelacy donors throughout the evening. The Prelate reminded
the guests that His Holiness had, during previous events, awarded medals to
Mr. and Mrs. Sarkis Sepetjian, Mr. and Mrs. Osko Karaghossian, singer Harout
Pamboukjian, editor Mr. Nazaret Berberian, sponsor Mr. Harout Ohanessian,
and Mr. Guiragos Titizian (posthumously).
During the Pontifical Banquet, Mr. Harry Nadjarian, Mr. Khajag
Dikijian, and Professor Harut Barsamian were awarded the "Prince of Cilicia"
medal, while Mr. Vahan Bezdikian, Deacon Mark Shirin, Mrs. Silva
Tchakmakjian, and Ms. Rosette Haratoonian were awarded the "Knight of
Cilicia" medal. His Holiness presented mementos to Mr. Harout Jabarian and
Mr. Charlie Ghailian in commendation for their dedication and support.

Prior to inviting His Holiness to deliver his message, the Prelate
reflected on one of the main themes of the Pontifical Visit, which is the
continued progress of our schools. His Eminence announced that His Holiness
had responded favorably to a request by Prelacy Councils member to allocate
a large part of donations to schools, a decision he regarded as a strong
testament to the devotion of His Holiness to the Armenian School, language,
and heritage. The Prelate then presented His Holiness with a gift on behalf
of the Prelacy as a token of gratitude. The gift was an exquisite diamond
studded ring which bore the emblem of the Catholicosate of Cilicia and the
two-headed eagle. It was a beautiful work of art and a donation by the
owner of "Tacori", Mr. Haig Tacorian.
His Holiness greeted the guests and expressed appreciation for the
dinner, which he said is not just a dinner but a demonstration of a
commitment to safeguarding our future. His Holiness spoke with acclaim of
the service and devotion of the Prelate, and commended the Prelacy Councils
members for their input and contributions.
In commendation for the Prelate's decades-long service, His Holiness
presented him with a Panagia (Banageh).
Continuing his message, His Holiness stated that a people are
sustained by its ideals, and without ideals a community loses it meaning and
purpose. The spiritual, the cultural, a value system is what form the heart
and soul of a people, and for centuries it has been our churches and our
schools that have defended and promoted our values and they must remain the
central elements of our collective lives. His Holiness affirmed that for
the Armenian people as a whole, empowerment of Armenia, support of Karabakh,
and furthering of the Armenian Cause are imperatives, as we will never
forget our one and a half million martyrs and our lost lands. The Pontiff
stated that we must not be content with just commemoration and recognition;
that we must demand justice be served our rights fulfilled. We will remain
faithful to the legacy of our martyrs. Reflecting on the first ten days of
the Pontifical Visit, His Holiness commendably noted that he had witnessed
renewal and a strengthened sense of national identity. He highlighted the
importance of renewal in the Church and by the Church, stressing that
clergyman from Antelias delve into their service with this approach in mind
and with the ideal of the Holy See as a Faith Mission. On the topic of the
Armenian Cause, His Holiness stated that our just cause is the cause of our
Church, it is the cause of attaining our human rights and justice, and
stressed that our people will continue to demand from Turkey what is
rightfully ours until we reach our ultimate goals. In conclusion, His
Holiness affirmed that Armenians around the world, whether in Armenia,
Artsakh, or the Diaspora, are united in this common cause, that we as a
people are not resigned but rather have a great deal more to contribute to
our homeland and our history.
Throughout the evening, guests were entertained with musical
interludes by Hovig Meghrigian on the violin, and singer Hovhannes
Papakhanian who performed songs by Sayat Nova. Guests also enjoyed a slide
show presentation on our Prelacy Schools, and on the mission of the
Catholicosate and the Seminary.
The evening came to a close with the benediction by His Holiness,
and the Cilician and Pontifical anthems.
HIS HOLINESS AWARDS MEDALS TO
PONTIFICAL VISIT SPONSORS AND PRELACY DONORS
During the Pontifical Banquet on October 16, 2011, His Holiness
Catholicos Aram I awarded "Prince of Cilicia" and "Knight of Cilicia" medals
to Prelacy sponsors and supporters for their contributions to the
Catholicosate, Prelacy, and community.
His Holiness awarded the following individuals:
Mr. Harry Nadjarian, "Prince of Cilicia": In addition to his
benevolence to community organizations, Mr. Nadjarian most recently donated
$250,000 as the main sponsor of the Pontifical Visit. He has lent his
support to the Armenian Evangelical Union and the Armenian National
Committee.
Mr. Khajag Dikijian, "Prince of Cilicia" Has devotedly served for
the community for decades. Mr. Dikijian has been a member and Chair of the
Prelacy Executive Council, has brought his service to Prelacy Schools, and
is currently a member of the Catholicosate Central Executive.
Professor Harut Barsamian, "Prince of Cilicia": Prof. Barsamian is a
sponsor of the Prelacy and the Orange County Armenian Center, the latter of
which bears his name. Most recently, he generously donated 500 shares of
Apple stock to the Prelacy in honor of the Pontifical Visit. He has also
established a scholarship fund at the Prelacy, and proceeds from his book
"Resurrection with Shoe and Cane" are allocated to the scholarship.
Mr. Vahan Bezdikian, "Knight of Cilicia": Mr. Bezdikian is a member
of the Prelacy Executive Council, supervised and oversaw the building of the
Prelacy headquarters and continues to serve in that regard as the Chair of
the Building Committee, and has been a long-time sponsor of the Prelacy and
community organizations.
Deacon Mark Shirin, "Knight of Cilicia": Mr. Shirin is a Seminary
alumnus, a delegate at the Representatives Assembly, devoted servant of Holy
Trinity Church of Fresno, and has represented the Prelacy at the
Catholicosate General Assembly. Mr. Shirin and his wife Margaret were the
main sponsors of the Pontifical Banquet.
Mrs. Silva Tchakmakjian, "Knight of Cilicia": A "silent sponsor",
Mrs. Tchakmakjian has been quietly lending her generous support to the
Prelacy, Armenian organizations, and especially Armenia, through her "Garni"
foundation. Most recently, she donated $100,000 on the occasion of the
Pontifical Visit.
Ms. Rosette Haratoonian, "Knight of Cilicia": Ms. Haratoonian is a
Prelacy sponsor who generously donated to the Prelacy an apartment building
she came to own through her hard work.
During various Pontifical Visit events, His Holiness commended other
community sponsors as well, awarding medals to Mr. and Mrs. Sarkis
Sepetjian, Mr. and Mrs. Osko Karaghossian, singer Harout Pamboukjian, editor
Mr. Nazaret Berberian, sponsor Mr. Harout Ohanessian, and Mr. Guiragos

HIS HOLINESS CATHOLICOS ARAM I BLESSES THE FOUNDATION OF ST. GARABED CHURCH
OF LAS VEGAS
On Wednesday, October 19, 2011, His Holiness Catholicos Aram I,
accompanied by H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, Clergy and
Councils members, arrived in Las Vegas where over the next two days the
Pontiff met with community members and blessed the foundation of St. Garabed
Church.
Upon their arrival, His Holiness an entourage were welcomed by
Parish Pastor Archpriest Fr. Avedis Torossian, Parish Council members, and
Las Vegas Pontifical Visit main sponsors Mr. and Mr. Alex and Arda
Yemenidjian, who also hosted His Holiness to a dinner that evening. During
the dinner, His Holiness spoke with high regards of the Yemenidjian family,
and of the dedicated service of Mrs. Yemenidjian's mother Verjine Koujakian
who was one of the founders of the Las Vegas Church Sunday School.
On the afternoon of Thursday, October 20, His Holiness was hosted to
lunch by the Parish Council, with the participation of representatives from
the ARF "Ishkhan" Gomideh and sister organizations.
Late afternoon, His Holiness and entourage arrived at the St.
Garabed Church and Community Center complex, where over 300 community
members were gathered, enthusiastically awaiting the arrival of the Pontiff
for the groundbreaking and blessing of the Church foundation. Church
benefactor Mr. Larry Barnes participated in the service, as did Clark County
Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani. Representatives from the offices of
Governor Brian Sandoval, Senator Harry Reid, Senator Dean Heller,
Congresswoman Shelley Berkley, and Congressman Dr. Joe Heck were also
present.
With the "Hrashapar" hymn, His Holiness entered the complex and
conducted the traditional blessing of salt and bread, after which ARS
Saturday School students presented a cultural program.
Thus began the blessing of the foundation ceremony.
His Holiness consecrated the Church dome and altar crosses, and the
Prelate consecrated the 16 pillars, which represent the 12 apostles, the
four Gospel writers, and St. Gregory the Illuminator, the foundations of our
Church.
Following the groundbreaking and blessing, His Holiness
congratulated the Parish community on their great achievement, conveyed the
importance of working together with faith, hope, and love, and expressed his
wish that the project reach its successful completion in the near future.
Speaking on what it means to build a church, His Holiness stated that our
church belongs to our people, the people are our church, and St. Garabed
Church of Las Vegas will also be the people's church and will serve all
indiscriminately.
The Prelate expressed gratitude to His Holiness for his Pontifical
visit to the Las Vegas community and pledged that all will work towards of
their mission with unwavering faith, hope, and love.
"Achahampouyr" followed, during which faithful received the
blessings of the Pontiff, after which His Holiness toured the complex,
expressing his contentment at the project and commending the service of the
Parish Priest, Parish Council, Ladies Auxiliary, and all volunteers.
The Parish community set in motion their dream of having their own
church nearly two years ago, when by the generosity of benefactor Larry
Barnes, the current site was purchased. The benefaction of Mr. Barnes was
in memory of his wife Seda Der Garabedian-Barnes, and her ancestors who had
perished in the Genocide. The remodeling phase began soon after, with first
the completion of the hall, where services are currently held. The second
phase is the construction of the Church, which will now proceed with the
blessings of His Holiness. Once the project is completed, the complex will
serve as the spiritual and cultural hub of the Las Vegas Armenian community.
In the evening, a banquet was held in honor of His Holiness at the
Tropicana Hotel, hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Alex and Arda Yemenidjian. Over 350
guests from different states had gathered to honor His Holienss.
Mr. Yemenidjian welcomed His Holiness, expressing his thanks for
what he called a historic day.
Parish Council Chair Mr. Adroushan Armenian expressed thanks and
gratitude to His Holiness for blessing the Las Vegas community with his
Pontifical visit. He then spoke of the history of St. Garabed Church and
the stages that have led them to where they are today. Addressing
benefactor Mr. Larry Barnes, Mr. Armenian said, "The Las Vegas Armenian
community and all Armenians around the world are grateful for your generous
donations that motivated us to undertake this important project."
On behalf of the Executive Council, Mr. Vahan Bezdikian welcomed His
Holiness and expressed gratitude for the day. He noted how the Las Vegas
Armenian community has a decades-long history but it was just in the last
few years that they experienced a revival, which is evidenced by the Church
project currently underway. He commended the Parish Council and affiliated
bodies for their dedication, and thanked the Yemenidjian family for hosting
the visit.
The banquet included a cultural program of dances and recitations.
The Prelate expressed his appreciation and commended Mr. and Mr.
Yemenidjian for their commitment and service to our Church, and on behalf of
His Holiness presented them with a memento. The Prelate also commended the
Parish Priest and Council, and presented a hand cross to the Church.
The Prelate joyfully welcomed the presence of faithful from Los
Angeles, Arizona, New Jersey, and Chicago. He reminded the guests that the
theme of the Pontifical Visit is "With faith we build", and stressed that
with faith we will have spiritual renewal, with faith we will serve for the
continued progress of our schools, and with faith we will continue to fight
for the Armenian Cause. He then invited His Holiness to deliver his
message.
His Holiness once again greeted the Parish community and all those
who had journeyed to be a part of the historic day. He affirmed that the
establishment and livelihood of a community depends on collective efforts,
which is what leads to successful realization of endeavors. The Pontiff
urged all to serve for the collective good with unwavering faith and strong
determination, and concluded by once again commending the hosts, Executive
Council, sponsors and supporters.
ECUMENICAL PRAYER SERVICE LED BY
HIS HOLINESS CATHOLICOS ARAM I
On Wednesday, October 19, 2011, His Holiness Catholicos Aram I led
an ecumenical prayer service, with the participation of spiritual leaders
and clergy from the Armenian Apostolic, Catholic, and Evangelical Churches,
Coptic, Syriac, and Antiochian Orthodox Churches, and the Roman Catholic
Church.
The prayer service was hosted by the Coptic Orthodox Diocese and
took place at St. Mary and St. Athanasius Church in Northridge.
Participating in the prayer service were H.E. Archbishop Moushegh
Mardirossian, Prelate, H.G. Bishop Serapion (Coptic Church), H.E. Archbishop
Mor Clemis Eugene Kaplan (Syriac Church), Bishop Joseph Zehlaoui (Antiochian
Church), Rt. Rev. Alexei Smith (Roman Catholic Church), Very Rev. Fr. Krikor
Chahinian (Armenian Catholic Church), and Rev. Joe Matossian (Armenian
Evangelical Union), and clergy members from each of the Churches. The
Prelate was accompanied by H.E. Archbishop Yeprem Tabakian and clergy
members.
With the singing of the "Hrashapar" hymn, His Holiness entered the
Church accompanied by the clergy. Prayers were then offered by the leaders
or clergy of each Church in their respective languages, followed by readings
from the Bible.
Remarks were delivered by Bishop Serapion, Archbishop Kaplan, and
Bishop Zehlaoui, all of whom reflected on the current situation in the
Middle East and specifically on the recent clashes in Egypt, and expressed
their hope for peace to prevail in the region. Bishop Serapion conveyed the
greetings and well wishes of H.H. Pope Shenouda III to His Holiness.
The Prelate spoke of the purpose and significance of the ecumenical
gathering, and invited His Holiness to deliver his message.
After greeting the clergy, His Holiness commended Bishop Serapion,
who he has known for many years, speaking highly of his service in
ecumenical affairs from the Middle East to the United States, and expressed
his thanks to the Bishop for hosting the gathering.
His Holiness noted that Christian Churches were established on the
basis of peace, that peace forms the heart of our Churches and the
foundation of our mission. Christians are disciples of peace and must
remain so, and with their faith, knowledge, and hope, must preserve their
identity in the Middle East as they have deep roots in the region and form a
part of the region's rich and ancient culture. Being a disciple of peace
does not mean being stagnant, it means protecting one's rights, assuming
responsibility of obligations, and contributing to the development of
democracy. His Holiness concluded by calling for strengthening of
ecumenical collaboration.
An exchange of mementos followed, after which His Holiness and
clergy were hosted to lunch by the Coptic Church.
A CULTURAL EVENING IN HONOR OF HIS HOLINESS
HOSTED BY THE ARMENIAN SOCIETY OF LOS ANGELES
On the evening of Tuesday, October 18, 2011, a reception was held in
honor of His Holiness Catholicos Aram I at the headquarters of the Armenian
Society of Los Angeles. The hall was filled with over five hundred guests
who had come to honor His Holiness.
Upon his arrival at the center, His Holiness, accompanied by H.E.
Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, was welcomed by the Board and
members of the organization. At the entrance, His Holiness conducted the
traditional blessing of salt and bread, followed by the Blessing of the Home
service.
The program began with the national anthems of the U.S. and Armenia
by singer Anahit Nercisyan.
Welcoming remarks were delivered by Board of Directors Chair Mr.
Njdeh Pirjanian who spoke of the visit of His Holiness as a historic event.
He noted how sixteen years earlier His Holiness had visited the previous
center of the organization where he had wished them success in their
service. He stated that the organization members had committed to that
pledge and today, in their new center, they continue their service to the
youth and community. It was apparent that preserving the Armenian culture
is a major focus of the organization's mission, as the evening was filled
with a beautiful program of songs and recitations.
The organization's choir, led by Mikayel Avedissian, presented a
number of songs, a young member of the organization Eric Atamian beautifully
recited Barouyr Sevag's "We are few, but we are Armenian", and Saturday
School students performed a number of traditional songs led by Hermine
Toumanian. Master of Ceremonies Tina Tamlakian also participated in the
cultural program with recitations. All of the performances were met with
great applause by the audience.
Following the cultural program, remarks were delivered by Board of
Trustees Chair Dr. Vaughn Gregor welcomed the guests, and expressed thanks
to His Holiness and the Prelate for facilitating and accepting their request
to honor the Pontiff at their center. He referred to His Holiness as a
source of inspiration, and lauded his leadership in ecumenical affairs and
as an advocate of the Armenian Cause and rights in the international arena.
He conveyed his well wishes to His Holiness, and invited the Prelate for his
remarks.
The Prelate commended the noble mission of the Armenian Society of
Los Angeles and their work in establishing this home for the community, a
place that fosters the virtues of love and harmonious collaboration. He
thanked for organizing and hosting the evening and the beautifully prepared
program, and invited His Holiness for his message.
His Holiness greeted the guests and blessed the new center, stating
that it not merely a physical structure, rather a living center with spirit
where ethical and cultural values are preserved and fostered which serves
the people, just as the Armenian Church does. He spoke of the Iran-Armenian
population as people who preserve and instill the Armenian culture, are
faithful to the Armenian language, and are propagators of our national
values and heritage. His Holiness stated that he has visited the three
Dioceses of Iran numerous times and noted that they are the embodiment of
our history, culture, and church. He also stated that the program they had
prepared is a testament to the fact that although we are physically far from
Armenia, we are rooted in the Armenian spirit.
Speaking on the multi-faceted mission of the Catholicosate of
Cilicia, His Holiness specifically its role in the Diaspora. His Holiness
noted that for decades, Armenian Diaspora communities kept alive the spirit
of a free and independent Armenia and its symbol, our tri-color flag, and
now, it is the responsibility of all to safeguard the freedom and
independence of Armenia, to support Artsakh, to maintain the Armenian-ness
of our institutions. Furthermore, we have a responsibility to carry out the
will of our martyrs. In three years, we will be commemorating the
centennial of the Armenian Genocide; alongside honoring the memory of our
martyrs, we must bring our cause to the attention of the world and demand
our rights because "a free and independent Armenian must also be a united
Armenia...we will rally for a Greater Armenia", stressed His Holiness, who
also reflected on the importance of unity in this regard with the combined
spirit of Armenia, Karabakh, and the Diaspora. In conclusion, His Holiness
called for the renewal of our pledges as we continue our path to securing
our rights and strengthening our homeland.
As the program was drawing to a close, the Prelate announced that
His Holiness had brought a memento from Antelias, a reproduction of one
of the pages of the ancient "Partser Pert" Gospel, which he presented to
them.
With the singing of the Pontifical anthem, His Holiness was led out
of the hall and toured the various departments of the center. A reception
in his honor followed.
HIS HOLINESS MEETS WITH ARMENIAN PROFESSIONALS
AT A LUNCHEON HELD AT THE PRELACY
On Tuesday, October 18, 2011, a luncheon was held at the Prelacy
during which His Holiness Catholicos Aram I met with Armenian professionals
of various fields. The luncheon was organized by the Pontifical Visit
Public Relations Committee and was significant in that it related to the
program recently initiated by the Catholicosate of Cilicia aimed at
gathering information about our manpower in the Diaspora.
His Holiness, accompanied by H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian,
Prelate, and Councils members, was led to the "Dikran and Zarouhie Der
Ghazarian" Hall where over a hundred Armenian professionals welcomed the
Pontiff.
The lunch meeting provided attendees with a unique opportunity to
discuss with His Holiness challenges and opportunities affecting our
community and to hear his paternal guidance and message. Attendees were
given forms to fill out, which will be submitted to the Catholicosate to
assist in their program of gathering data.
Master of Ceremonies Mrs. Pattyl Aposhian-Kasparian welcomed the
guests, and thanked His Holiness for the opportunity to hold this important
luncheon, which she said is about acknowledging the individuals who take on
another level of responsibility and burden. "Every attendee here volunteers
their talent, skills and knowledge for the betterment of the Armenian
community. Armenians are achieving professional milestones in larger
numbers in every professional arena. We all have potential power inside us
and it is the request of His Holiness to identify our talents, strengths and
skills to serve the better good of all Armenians." She concluded by
stating, "Your Holiness, allow our presence today representing 12 active
professional organizations to signal our support to your initiative."
An opportunity was given for a representative from each organization
to share information with the guests to more closely familiarize them with
the endeavors and mission of their specific organization.
The Prelate commended all the organizations present for the work
they carry out and for their service to the Armenian community. He then
invited His Holiness to deliver his message.
His Holiness expressed joy and pride at the growing number of
Armenian professionals. He noted that we must not be satisfied with the
status quo, rather individuals and organizations must strive to do more as
the work that needs to be done is unending. His Holiness also stated that
professionals must consider service as a part of their mission and they, in
conjunction with the Church, must reach out to members of society and assist
in the betterment of their communities.
A question and answer session followed on topics including
confiscated Churches in Western Armenia and the growing number of religious
factions in Armenia and the Diaspora. In conclusion, His Holiness stated
that manpower is much more crucial then financial capacity, as manpower is
God given while the financial is man-built.
The event concluded with the benediction by His Holiness.
HIS HOLINESS CATHOLICOS ARAM I VISITS MESROBIAN SCHOOL
On Tuesday, October 18, 2011, His Holiness visited Mesrobian School
in Montebello where the Principals, teachers, and students of both Mesrobian
and Ari Guiragos Minassian School of Orange County had gathered to welcome
him. Also participating in the visit were Clergy and Councils members, Holy
Cross Cathedral Board of Trustees, and representatives of local sister
organizations.
Upon his arrival, His Holiness, who was accompanied by H.E.
Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, was greeted by Mesrobian School
Principal Mr. Seto Boyajian, AG Minassian School Principal Mrs. Kohar Zaher,
and students who had gathered in the courtyard.
The program took place in the courtyard, and began with the singing
of the Lord's Prayer. Welcoming remarks were delivered by both Principals,
and representatives from Holy Cross Cathedral Board of Trustees and
Mesrobian School Parent Support Committee. Two students also spoke,
thanking His Holiness for dedicating this year to the Armenian Child.
A cultural program of songs and recitation by students from both
schools followed.
In his message, His Holiness spoke of the role of today's children
in our future and the irreplaceable role of the Armenian Church and School
in the lives of all our people but especially the youth with regards to
religious and national instruction. Our lives are a daily struggle, said
His Holiness, and our schools are at the forefront, noting that it is our
church and schools that built the Armenian community in the Diaspora for the
benefit of our people. In conclusion, His Holiness commended all the
parents who have entrusted their children to the care of the Armenian
School.
An exchange of mementos between His Holiness and the Principal
followed, and the program came to a lose with the benediction and the
singing of the Cilician anthem. The administration then hosted His Holiness
to a reception.
During the visit, His Holiness also visited classrooms and had an
opportunity to address the students.
MAYOR ANTONIO VILLARAIGOSA HOSTS A DINNER AT
GETTY HOUSE IN HONOR OF HIS HOLINESS CATHOLICOS ARAM I
On the evening of Monday, October 17, 2011, Los Angeles Mayor the
Honorable Antonio Villaraigosa hosted a dinner for His Holiness Catholicos
Aram I at his official residence, the Getty House.
His Holiness was accompanied by H.E. Archbishop Moushegh
Mardirossian, Prelate, and staff bearer Very Rev. Fr. Mesrob Sarkissian.
Among the invited guests were leaders of the Christian, Muslim, and Jewish
faiths, including H.E. Archbishop Mor Clemis Eugene Kaplan (Syriac Orthodox
Church), Pastor William Monroe Campbell (Mr. Gilead Missionary Baptist
Church), Rabbi Mark Diamond (Board of Rabbis), Imam Jihad Turk (Religious
Director, Islamic Center of Southern California), Pastor Jim Tolle (Church
on the Way), Very Rev. Fr. John Bakas (Dean, St. Sophia Cathedral), Rt. Rev.
Mary Glasspool (Episcopal Diocese), and Fr. Antony Attallah (Coptic Orthodox
Diocese). Guests from the Prelacy included Central Executive Council
members Khajag Dikijian and Vahe Yacoubian, Executive Council member Vahrij
Pilavjian, ARF CC Chair Avedik Izmirlian, Mourad Topalian, Varant Melkonian,
and Harry Nadjarian.
Mayor Villaraigosa first had a private meeting with His Holiness and
the Prelate, after which they joined the guests for dinner.
The Mayor welcomed His Holiness, announcing that it was the first
time he was hosting a spiritual leader at his residence.
With leaders from the various faiths gathered around one table, the
evening included interesting dialogue on ecumenical and inter-faith
relations. It was stressed that although there are differences among the
faiths, there must always be mutual respect. Given his vast experience in
the ecumenical arena, His Holiness answered questions addressed to him by
the guests.
In his remarks, the Mayor spoke highly of His Holiness and also on
the contributions of the Armenian community in Los Angeles.
The evening concluded with an exchange of mementos.
HIS HOLINESS CATHOLICOS ARAM I VISITS ARARAT HOME
On Monday, October 17, 2011, His Holiness Catholicos Aram I visited
Ararat Home in Mission Hills where he blessed the administration and
blessed, conducted a prayer service at the Chapel, and visited the Museum.
His Holiness, accompanied by H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian,
Prelate, Clergy and Councils members, first visited the skilled-nursing
facility where he led a prayer service and blessed the patients. Next they
headed to the assisted-living facility where His Holiness led the Blessing
of the Home prayer service and blessed the patients. The Pontiff reflected
on the words Ararat Home, saying it had special meaning for Armenians.
Ararat is the symbol of Armenians, Ararat is the symbol of our identity, of
our unity, stated His Holiness, and said the word "home" also symbolizes
family. "Home brings together the same values, the same traditions. This
is not an old people's home. In this house, the spiritual and medical come
together, and I'm very much touched by this home". His Holiness presented
the residents with gifts of crosses, then headed to the Sheen Memorial
Chapel for a prayer service, after which he toured the Eskijian Museum.
His Holiness and entourage were then hosted to a luncheon by the
administration. Welcoming remarks were delivered by Ararat Home Board Chair
Mr. Nazar Ashjian, member Mr. Joseph Kanimian, and Central Executive member
Mr. Vahe Yacoubian.
The Prelate commended the administration for their devoted service,
and noted that the Prelacy and Ararat Home have had a close relationship for
many years and that Prelacy Clergy members visit the home on a monthly basis
to celebrate Divine Liturgy and offer prayers. He then invited His Holiness
to deliver his message.
His Holiness commended the administration for their care and
nurturing of the elderly and reflecting on the name of the home, said that
just as Ararat mountain belongs to all Armenians, this home too, which bears
its name, serves all Armenians. His Holiness once again commended the Board
and all the sponsors who support the valuable mission of Ararat Home, and
expressed his wish that this institution be an ideal example to all
community organizations.
HIS HOLINESS CATHOLICOS ARAM I VISITS FERRAHIAN SCHOOL
On the morning of Monday, October 17, 2011, His Holiness Catholicos
Aram I arrived at Ferrahian School where he was met with great applause by
students waving Armenian flags who had gathered in the courtyard to welcome
the Pontiff to their school.
His Holiness, accompanied by the H.E. Archbishop Moushegh
Mardirossian, Prelate, was welcomed to the school by Principal John
Kossakian, Board of Regents members Mr. Mark Gedikian, school board members
and parents. In attendance were Clergy, Central Executive and Executive
Council members, and representatives of local sister organizations.
After the traditional blessing of salt and bread, His Holiness
proceeded to "Avedissian" Hall for a cultural program which consisted of
recitations, songs, and dance by the students.
Master of Ceremonies Mrs. Azadouhi Ghazarian welcomed the guests and
stated that the day was a historic one as the students granted the
opportunity to see His Holiness in person for the first time.
Principal Kossakian welcomed His Holiness to the first Armenian
School in America, and affirmed that Ferrahian High, Marie Cabayan
Elementary, and Ashkhen Pilavjian Pre-Schools would remain beacons of
Armenian education. Addressing the students, the Principal brought to their
attention that aside from being the spiritual leader, His Holiness is also a
champion of the Armenian Cause and a staunch defender of the rights of the
Armenian people. In conclusion, the Principal announced that he had a
surprise for His Holiness, a hand-written museum quality document from 1826
which had Armenian drawings and the "I confess with faith" prayer written on
it. It had been donated to the school some time ago but the Principal
announced that the most appropriate home for it is the Museum of the
Catholicosate of Cilicia. Students read seven verses from the prayer, then
presented the document to His Holiness. The Prelate was then invited to
deliver his remarks.
The Prelate noted that at that moment, His Holiness was at a place
that was very dear to his heart, the Armenian School surrounded by Armenian
students and teachers, and invited His Holiness to deliver his message.
His Holiness first noted that he was impressed by how quietly and
interestedly the students were following the program, saying that it was yet
another positive quality of the Armenian School, a place where character and
Armenian identity built. His Holiness commended the teachers, calling them
"second parents" who have just as important a role as parents do.
Addressing the students, His Holiness urged them to learn Armenian, speak
Armenian, and preserve our language and culture for in a few years they will
be the leaders of our community. In conclusion, His Holiness commended the
Principal, faculty, and all affiliated bodies who help the school fulfill
its mission, and prayed for the Lord to bless the students and grant success
to the school.
The program came to a close with the benediction by His Holiness,
after which a reception was held in the faculty room in honor of the
Pontiff.
PONTIFICAL DIVINE LITURGY AT ST. MARY'S CHURCH
On the morning of Sunday, October 16, 2011, thousands of faithful of
all ages had gathered at St. Mary's Church in Glendale for the Pontifical
Divine Liturgy celebrated by His Holiness Catholicos Aram I, to receive the
Pontiff's blessings and hear his inspiring message.
His Holiness, accompanied by H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian,
Prelate, arrived at St. Mary's Church where Homenetmen scouts had lined up
in his honor along the path leading to the Church doors. Present to greet
His Holiness were Clergy and Councils members, H.E. Archbishop Mor Clemis
Eugene Kaplan, Prelate of the Syriac Orthodox Church, H.E. Archbishop Yeprem
Tabakian, H.E. Archbishop Vatche Hovsepian, and representatives of sister
organizations.
His Holiness and entourage were led to the Church doors were white
doves were released as Sunday School students sand the Pontifical anthem.
With the singing of the "Hrashapar" hymn, His Holiness entered the
Church and proceeded to the altar to begin the Divine Liturgy. The Prelate
and Archbishop Tabakian assisted at the altar.
Before the Pontifical message, the Prelate greeted the faithful and
thanked the Lord for granting the Prelacy this fourth Pontifical Visit of
His Holiness. He reflected on the past ten days of the Pontifical Visit
which has renewed us spiritually and given impetus to our schools and cause.
He then invited His Holiness to deliver his message.
His Holiness conveyed his paternal blessings to all the faithful
present and especially to the Prelate who is fully devoted in his service to
our church and people, and to the Executive Council and members of sister
organizations for their service towards the advancement of our community.
Citing from the day's Scripture reading, which was the Apostle
Luke's account of our Lord Jesus Christ visiting His hometown of Nazareth,
His Holiness noted a passage from the Old Testament which Jesus had read
during His visit, "The spirit of the Lord is upon Me because He anointed Me
to preach the Gospel to the poor, He has sent Me to proclaim release to the
captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are
downtrodden. To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord". Jesus Christ was
sent because mankind and the world had separated themselves from God, man
had lost his God-given virtues. Jesus Christ is the truth and the path to
redemption, and these principles are upheld by our Church.
Speaking on our Church history and the role of the Armenian Church,
His Holiness noted that Jesus Christ revealed Himself to Armenia through
Etchmiadzin, established our Church, and centuries on remains engrained in
the lives of the Armenian people. Our Church became that which built and
preserved our faith, culture, and identity. The Church has had an
invaluable role throughout our history, from Khrimian Hayrig to Sardarabad
to Kharabakh to an independent Armenia and the voice of our Church today
echoes loudly from Armenia to Kharabakh to the Diaspora, breathing life into
all. His Holiness urged the faithful to be active participants in teh life
of our Church, to become children of our Church, and to follow the righteous
path of Jesus Christ which leads to salvation.
The Cilician and Pontifical anthems were sung at the conclusion of
the Liturgy, and His Holiness was then led from the altar with the singing
of the "Oorakh Ler" hymn.
PRELACY SCHOOLS BANQUET IN HONOR OF
HIS HOLINESS CATHOLICOS ARAM I
- OSKO KARAGHOSSIAN AWARDED THE "PRINCE OF CILICIA" MEDAL
On the evening of Saturday, October 15, 2011, nearly five hundred
community members gathered at "Avedissian" Hall for a banquet in honor of
His Holiness Catholicos Aram I. The banquet was organized by the Board of
Regents, in conjunction with Prelacy Schools. The evening's hosts were Mr.
and Mrs. Osko and Yeran Karaghossian.
His Holiness, accompanied by H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian,
Prelate, arrived at the hall where he was greeted with a standing ovation
and great applause from the guests. In attendance were Clergy and Council
members, Board of Regents members, Principals, Directors, and faculty of
Prelacy Schools, parents, and members of sister organizations.
Welcoming remarks were delivered by Board of Regents Chair Mr. Mark
Gedikian, and Principal John Kossakian, who was also the Master of
Ceremonies. Mr. Kossakian reflected on the three themes of the Pontifical
Visit, which are spiritual renewal, reinvigorating Schools and the Armenian
Cause, and the invaluable role His Holiness has had and continues to have in
all three arenas. He lauded His Holiness as "a great educator, an educator
of educators" and invited the Prelate for his remarks.
The Prelate commended Armenian educators and all those who lend
their moral and financial support to the unique mission of Armenian schools
and Armenian teachers. He spoke highly of the unwavering and generous
support of the evening's host, the Karaghossian family, who have contributed
significantly to our community, and announced that in recognition of their
benevolence, His Holiness would be awarding them the "Prince of Cilicia"
medal.
After awarding them the "Prince of Cilicia" medal, His Holiness
commended the Karaghossian family for their support of Armenian Schools.
Speaking on the role of Armenian Schools and teachers, His Holiness stated
that the Armenian School is the livelihood of our community and the
foundation of the school are the teachers who have the mighty responsibility
of instructing our youth on becoming good people and good Armenians. He
expressed concern on the need for more Armenian teachers, here and in
Lebanon as well, and for more Armenian students to attend Armenian Schools.
HIS HOLINESS ARAM I AND HIS BEATITUDE BECHARA RAI
MEET IN LOS ANGELES
On the morning of Saturday, October 15, 2011, His Holiness
Catholicos Aram I met with His Beatitude Bechara Rai, Patriarch of the
Lebanese Maronite Church.
His Holiness arrived at Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Church in Los
Angeles accompanied by H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, H.E.
Archbishop Yeprem Tabakian, and clergy. They were welcomed by Patriarch
Rai, Bishops of the Maronite Dioceses of Los Angeles and Brazil, and clergy
members.
The discussion centered on the current goings-on in Lebanon, the
situation of Christians in the Middle East, and the relationship between
Churches headquartered in the Middle East with their faithful in the
Diaspora. Both spiritual leaders emphasized the importance of unity between
Christian Churches and strengthened ties.
His Holiness gave His Beatitude a brief synopsis of the lecture he
had presented a day before at UCLA on the future of Christianity in the
Middle East. Patriarch Rai spoke of the meetings he has had during his
visit to the United States, which are generally related to Lebanon and the
Middle East.
After the hour long meeting, a prayer service was held inside the
Cathedral. A brief interview followed, during which both His Holiness and
His Beatitude spoke highly of the close relations between the Armenian and
Maronite communities and called for more collaboration.
RECEPTION IN HONOR OF HIS HOLINESS ORGANIZED BY ASBAREZ
- HIS HOLINESS AWARDS NAZARET BERBERIAN
"ST. MESROB MASHDOTS" MEDAL
On Friday, October 14, 2011, a reception in honor of Catholicos Aram
I was held during which His Holiness honored editor and scholar Nazareth
Berberian for his over forty years of service to the media and community.
The reception was hosted by Mr. Koko Topalian at his residence, and
with the participation of more than one hundred fifty guests. His Holiness
was accompanied by H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, Clergy,
and Central Executive and Executive Council members. Among those in
attendance were ARF Central Committee Chair Mr. Avedik Izmirlian and
members, Asbarez editor Mr. Apo Boghikian and colleagues, members of Mr.
Berberian's family, sponsors, and friends.
Upon his arrival, His Holiness conducted the traditional blessing of
salt and bread, then blessed the tables. Mr. Boghikian welcomed the guests,
inviting them to raise their glasses in honor of His Holiness. In his
welcoming remarks, Master of Ceremonies Raffi Hamparian reflected on the
leadership and guidance of His Holiness, and on the role of the Church in
our history and lives today.
A cultural program took place during dinner, after which the
official program began.
Mr. Boghikian expressed his appreciation to His Holiness for
accepting the request of Asbarez to host this reception in his honor. He
stated that the decision by His Holiness to honor Nazareth Berberian is a
demonstration of the love, respect, and dedication of His Holiness towards
those who serve the Armenian media, language, and culture. Mr. Boghikian
also thanked the guests in attendance for coming to honor His Holiness and
support our media.
Mr. Boghikian then announced that Mr. and Mrs. Osko and Yeran
Karaghossian were donating $25,000 to the ARF Central Committee in memory of
Yeran's brother Daron Avedissian, who was a member of the Catholicosate
Central Executive. He thanked the Karaghossian family for their generosity.
Mr. Boghikian them reflected on the career of Mr. Berberian, and
invited Mr. Sarkis Mahserejian, a close friend of Mr. Berberian, to
introduce him.
Through anecdotes and memories, Mr. Mahserejian spoke of the
different stages of Mr. Berberian's life that led him to where he is today.
He spoke highly of his service to the ARF and also that of Mr. Berberian's
wife Eva, who has also served ARF media outlets. Mr. Mahserejian extended
his best wishes to Mr. Berberian and invited Mr. Izmirlian to deliver his
remarks.
Mr. Izmirlian praised the dedication and service of Mr. Berberian
and presented him with a beautiful pen on this occasion.
The Prelate was then invited to deliver his message.
The Prelate reflected on the Pontifical Visit of His Holiness and
the activities and meetings of the past nine days. He expressed thanks and
commended Mr. Topalian for hosting the evening. The Prelate lauded the
career and service of Mr. Berberian and shared his own memories. He
expressed his appreciation to the Karaghossian family for their continued
generosity, and reminded the guests that in addition to the their donation
that evening, just over a week ago they donated $75,000 to the
Catholicosate, Prelacy, and Prelacy Schools, and were the hosts of the
banquet in honor of His Holiness which was held the following evening. The
Prelate then invited His Holiness for the award ceremony.
His Holiness stated that he first became acquainted with Mr.
Berberian in 1978, during the civil war in Lebanon, when the Pontiff was
called to serve as the Prelate of Lebanon. He remembered Mr. Berberian at
that time as a young devoted member of the ARF, and among the generation of
ARF members who breathed life into the community and served towards their
livelihood during those difficult days. He spoke of Mr. Berberian as first
and foremost a devotee of the ARF who sacrifices self to serve his larger
family, and second as a highly talented writer, editor, and journalist. In
commendation of his life's work, His Holiness awarded him the "St. Mesrob
Mashdots" medal, which was met with a standing ovation and great applause
and cheer from the guests. His Holiness stated that St. Mesrob must be
proud that an individual like Mr. Berberian who has preserved and fostered
his legacy is receiving a medal which carries his name. His Holiness also
commended Mrs. Eva Dervishian-Berberian for her service to the Armenian
media and to the Catholicosate. In conclusion, the Pontiff thanked Mr.
Topalian for hosting the evening and presented him with a memento.
Mr. Berberian expressed his thanks to all those who have influenced
and shaped him throughout his life. He echoed the words of the Master of
Ceremonies describing His Holiness as a moral compass, and expressed his
gratitude for the great honor. He concluded by thanking Mr. Boghikian and
Mr. Topalian for organizing and hosting the evening.
The official program came to a close with the benediction by His
Holiness.
HIS HOLINESS CATHOLICOS ARAM I LECTURES AT UCLA ON
"THE FUTURE OF CHRISTIANITY IN THE MIDDLE EAST"
On Friday, October 14, 2011, a capacity crowd gathered at UCLA's
Broad Hall to hear a riveting lecture by His Holiness Catholicos Aram I on
"The Future of Christianity in the Middle East".
The Pontifical lecture was sponsored by the UCLA Center for Near
Eastern Studies, Center for the Study of Religion, Department of History,
Armenian Students' Association, and the International Institute.
His Holiness, accompanied by H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian,
Prelate, and staff bearer Very Rev. Fr. Mesrob Sarkissian, arrived on campus
at noon where they were welcomed by Vice-Provost of International Studies
Randal Johson, Professor of History Richard Hovannisian, Professor of Near
Eastern Languages and Cultures and Director of the Center for the Study of
Religion Jacco Dieleman, Past Chair of Academic Senate and Professor of
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Ann Karagozian, and Chair of the
Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures William Schniedewind.
The UCLA delegation escorted His Holiness and entourage to Bunche
Hall for a reception, during which His Holiness said "the university is at
the center of my ministry and I consider myself everlastingly a student, and
I encourage action with reflection." Vice-Provost Randal Johnson presented
a gift to His Holiness, after which he was escorted to Broad Hall for the
lecture.
The event began with the campus welcome by Randal Johnson, who
thanked His Holiness for making the time to visit the University and
expressed how honored he was that the Pontiff was there to share his
thoughts on such an important topic.
Professor Richard Hovannisian in his opening remarks welcomed His
Holiness back to UCLA after 11 years, when the Pontiff had presided over
what he said was the best conference in recent memory on the issue of
Armenian Cilicia. He continued to say that with all that is currently going
on in the Middle East, the brave and truthful speech of His Holiness is
needed now more than ever. He concluded by stating that "His Holiness has
been a leading and trusted voice in the Middle East with respect to both
Muslim and inter-Christian dialogues", and after going through the Pontiff's
biography, invited him to the podium to present his lecture.
Catholicos Aram I stated that regime change will have a positive
impact on the lives of Christians only when democratic states are
established and the rights of Christian communities are fully recognized and
respected. Otherwise, he continued, "Christians will continue to emigrate."
In the second part of his speech, His Holiness spoke about the
challenges faced by the churches in the region. He stated that they must
redefine their self-understanding and reassess their witness in this region
which is in turmoil and transition because the church is a God-given
vocation and not simply an institution.
After sharing his view on the way the churches in the Middle East
should respond, Catholicos Aram I concluded: "Christians in the West should
not consider the churches of the Middle East as the remnants of Christian
history or mission lands, but as genuine partners; they should assist them
to remain in the Middle East, in their own lands. Judaism, Christianity, and
Islam must assume their prophetic roles at this critical moment of history,
and endeavor together to build a culture of life which promotes reconciled
diversities and a quality of life sustained by dignity, freedom, justice and
peace, as well as by tolerance and mutual trust. Especially at this time,
when the region is oscillating between uncertainty and promise, fear and
hope, the three monotheistic religions are called to respond to this
challenge."
