Euro Under 19 Qualification Update: Armenia Continues Success
After the most successful qualification campaign by the senior
national team for Armenia, their youth sides have continued to have
their fair share of success.
The Under-21 side is currently tied with the Czech Republic in their
Euro 2013 qualification campaign. The Under-17 side defeated
Wales - then-ranked 17 in Europe - 3-2 after initially trailing 2-0. They
ended up losing 2-1 to the Serbians, ranked 11th, to set up a chance
to move on with a victory over Lithuania and a Serbia draw or victory
against Wales.
In the midst of all of this, the nation was selected to host Group 10
for the 2012 Euro qualifiers for the Under-19 sides. Joining the
Armenians are Greece, Slovakia and Andorra with the first fixtures
having taken place earlier today and the next two scheduled for
October 23rd and October 26th.
Armenia was slated to open up qualifiers against Slovakia and were
victorious 2-1 with Hovhaness Hovhannisyan, of Pyunik Yerevan FC,
scoring both for the home side. Jakub Vojtus had a beauty of a
consolation goal for the Slovakian side.
In the other match in the group, the Greeks thumped minnow Andorra by
a final tally of 10 goals to none, with seven different players having
put one behind the net. Greece and Armenia will face off next, with
Slovakia taking on Andorra.
Final match day sees the Armenians taking on Andorra with Greece and
Slovakia facing off. The top two teams from each group move on along
with the highest ranking third-place side.
Teams that have already qualified to the "Elite Round" include host
nation Estonia along with England, France and Spain, all of which
received a bye. Bosnia & Herzegovina and the Republic of Ireland
advanced from Group 2. Romania and Italy advance from Group 3; Germany
and Montenegro from Group 7; Belgium and Slovenia from Group 8;
Denmark and Austria from Group 12.
