18TH INTERNATIONAL PRESS FESTIVAL KICKS OFF TODAY

TEHRAN -- The 18th edition of the International Press Festival will
be opening today during a ceremony at Tehran's Imam Khomeini Mosalla.
Almost one hundred international media coming from 50 countries are
expected to attend the festival, director of the International Press
Office of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance Mohammad-Javad
Aqajari said here on Monday.
Iraq, Afghanistan, Armenia and Syria are increasing their participation
in the festival this year, he said, adding that the international
section will be opening on October 28 to the end of the festival on
November 1.
Culture Minister for Press Affairs Mohammad-Jafar Mohammadzadeh
also said that most of the participants have set up their pavilions,
adding that this year 600 pavilions have been allotted to the festival
compared to 480 last year.
Several programs arranged for the side section program of the festival
including exhibition of the top press photos and cartoons of the past
year, he said.
Pioneers of the Iranian press along with their biographies will also
be introduced in an exhibit, he added.
He also mentioned that the museum of the press in collaboration with
the Iran National Library and Archives (INLA) is to be inaugurated
during the festival while several books are due to be introduced
as well.
Managing directors of Islamic periodicals from 30 countries are
expected to attend the first World of Islam Press Union at the
festival, Mohammadzadeh said.
Out of the 30 participants, 23 are coming from Muslim countries and
seven are from non-Muslim countries, he added.
The number might increase to 40 indicating the warm welcome for the
press from the Islamic countries in establishing an Islamic union.
