The Moldovan Prime Minister has apologized to Azerbaijani President
Ilham Aliyev for a recently disclosed weapons deal with Armenia.
According to the Moldovan Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Igor Bodiu, Vlad
Filat made the apology in Warsaw, Poland as he met the Azeri leader
on the sidelines of the Eastern Partnership summit.
The diplomat confirmed that Moldova had sold weapons worth $3 million
to Armenia, in the meantime considering the move politically wrong.
"Even though selling arms to Armenia is not prohibited, it is wrong
from a diplomatic point of view. Both countries are GUAM [Georgia,
Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Moldova] member states, and we are hopeful the
fact will not affect their bilateral relations. Two committees adjunct
to the parliament and Security Council are being set up in Moldova
to conduct a probe into the deal," the Azerbaijani media quoted Bodiu
as saying.
Moldova was earlier reported to have sold 60 tons of outdated weaponry
to Armenia. The Moldovan Defense Ministry confirmed the report;
the Armenian side denied it.
