Azerbaijan's election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security
Council shows the country's increasing international credibility,
an MP has said.
The election is a great accomplishment for a state that is just 20
years old, non-partisan member of parliament and political expert
Rasim Musabayov told Gun.Az.
"Kyrgyzstan was also trying to be elected from its own group, but
Kyrgyzstan's results were nowhere near Azerbaijan's. Armenia withdrew
its candidacy immediately after it put it forward, as it realized that
it would gain no support and would be disgraced. In turn, Azerbaijan
received great and unexpected support. Slovenia withdrew its candidacy
as a result."
The involvement in major politics brings not only benefits, but risks
too, the MP said.
"It is important to have a stance on any issue. This stance does not
have to be in favour, against or neutral, but there is responsibility
in every case. Different states that got involved in major politics
before us have also passed this test. I believe Azerbaijan will cope
successfully with this test."
