An MP has described two protocols on rapprochement with Turkey as a
"burden" on the Armenian parliament's agenda.
Stepan Safaryan, chairman of the Heritage parliamentary group, made the
comments in the Armenian National Congress on Monday, Tert.am reported.
He asked if the ruling coalition planned to take the issue off the
agenda. Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan said that this was a matter for
the president.
"I am sure that he, being aware of all the steps, will resolve the
issue in the fullness of time. He is responsible for foreign policy
and is better informed. If the time comes, the relevant proposal
will certainly be put forward. So the protocols are a 'frozen issue'
on the agenda," Abrahamyan said.
The two protocols on the establishment of diplomatic ties and
development of bilateral relations between Armenia and Turkey were
signed in October 2009 in Zurich, but stalled the following year and
have not been ratified by either parliament.
Turkey's Council of Ministers returned the protocols to the country's
Grand National Assembly following the June elections.
