Yerevan/Mediamax/. Chairman of "European Integration" NGO, political
scientist Karen Bekaryan thinks that the election of Azerbaijan as
non-permanent member of the UN Security Council won't seriously affect
the Karabakh conflict settlement process.
Addressing a press conference today, Karen Bekaryan said that "we may
be concerned that this fact may harm us in the context of Karabakh
conflict settlement, but in fact the non-permanent member of the
UN Security Council doesn't have such functions, possibilities and
authorities."
"Yes, the UN Security Council's non-permanent member may come up
with initiatives. But 3 countries out of 5 permanent members of the
UN Security Council are the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs and, besides,
these 5 countries may use their right of veto," Bekaryan said.
According to the expert, "the Aliyev clan has spent huge means to
become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council trying to
create an image of a winner and distract the attention of the Azeri
society from other problems."
"The fact that Azerbaijan didn't direct the means spent for the
election to UN Security Council to military expenses is a very positive
fact for us," Bekaryan concluded.
