AZERBAIJAN MAY RAISE NAGORNO-KARABAKH ISSUE IN UNSC

Azerbaijan may raise the issue of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in
the UN Security Council.
"Three of five permanent UN Security Council members - the U.S.,
Russia and France - are co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, and of
course, before raising the Nagorno-Karabakh issue in the UN Security
Council, we will discuss it with them," Azerbaijani Foreign Minister
Elmar Mammadyarov told journalists while commenting on the Azerbaijani
side's possible initiatives as a new non-permanent member of this
organization.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian
armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992,
including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts.
Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The
co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. -
are currently holding the peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four
resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the
surrounding regions.
Azerbaijan has been elected UNSC nonpermanent member for 2012-2013.
Mammadyarov called Azerbaijan's election to such an authoritative
unit of the UN a result of the international community's support.
