For the first time in history Azerbaijan was elected as a non-permanent
member of the UN Security Council on October 24.
Official Baku has already declared it will use the coming two years
of its membership to resolve the Karabakh conflict and return the
so-called "occupied territories." The US and Russian Ministries of
Foreign Affairs have congratulated Azerbaijan, Armenia has not made
any statement on the issue.
One should not make a tragedy of this, since Azerbaijan's opportunities
are restricted, political scientist Yervand Bozoyan told a press
conference today, adding that "none of the co-chairing countries
wants the format of negotiations to change and sees no alternative
to the OSCE Minsk Group."
Nevertheless, the political scientist says there are going to be new
troubles during the coming two years, and Armenia has to assume a
more active foreign policy to resist the challenges. "Armenia must
have a clear roadmap on the foreign policy field," he added.
Member of the Republican faction of the National Assembly Artak
Zakaryan does not deny that we are going to face new challenges on
the diplomatic field. He is confident that the Security Council will
come to understand soon that Azerbaijan's membership will not have
a positive influence on regional stability.
"I think that Azerbaijan will manage to prove during the coming two
years that such a responsibility cannot be entrusted to a country,
which is far from democracy and the capacity to contribute to global
security and regional peace, a country, whose state propaganda is
targeted at disseminating hatred and intolerance. Azerbaijan has its
unique view of territorial integrity, which differs from that of the
rest of 194 countries," Artak Zakaryan said.
Member of the Central Committee of the Social Democratic Hunchakian
Party Vahan Shirkhanyan does not see any danger in Azerbaijan's
non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council and is confident
that it will not change anything.
